I'm off to China for 2 months in October with work. The people I'm going with have all been before a few times and the stories I've been getting from them regarding the food is that the majority of it is fairly awful even in the 4 & 5 star hotels we're staying in. I wondered what your thoughts are on this, also I have a few tails/warnings I've heard that maybe you can confirm for me.
Bring toilet paper as most places never have any, I've heard of one tech who had to use his socks to wipe his arse.
The Chinese have no concept of personal space and will touch you, like feeling your hairy arm or touching ones beard.
They will regularly take pictures of you without asking
One can easily live on £15 per day
Their version of western food is chicken feet
The pollution in the cities is awful, especially in the north. It's so bad it gets into the fabric of your clothes and leaves a bad smell.
They don't queue at airports of train stations but rather bum rush on.

I just ate ramen cooked in rancid shit oil. I got tuberculosis and a hole in my lung, but it's okay because I lost 80lbs in the hospital (Chinese hospitals dont feed patients). I also got Hepatitis A and between that my alcoholism, well, let's just say my livers seen better days.
I only made $10 an hour but I got a one room hovel with a bare lightbulb and a toilet (boy let me tell you I needed that A LOT — there are NO health codes for restaurants).
I can't comment on the northern cities cause I lived in Kunming but the city REEKS of fermented piss and people literally just shit on the sidewalk.
I'm glad I'm out of that shithole. At least I was able to dodge my student loans and tax liens for a bit!

* The food is really great, IF you are not some weirdo Westerner who think that "beans on toast is delicious".
* Bring your own toilet paper, yes.
*Correct: it is a communal society, and personal/private life does not exist.
*Yes: the more rural the person, the more pictures they will take of you. They mean well.
*15 quid would be about 100 RMB per day, so yes, you can live well on that.
*No, their version of Western food is really bad pizza.
*The pollution depends on the city. Some cities are very polluted, yes.
*No lines anywhere. To fit in (And to ever get anywhere), be prepared to force your way into crowds. No lines, just crowds.

Oh, and also I started a gay ass food pamphlet that went bust and conned a few gullible Chinamen.

And do not eat at five star hotels. Go to places on the street that are busy and popular. You will have a far better, and more authentic, dining experience. DO NOT EAT WESTERN FOOD. Do not be like these wankers who go all the way to China ant et freaking McDonald's. Eat some real, local food.

Thanks Bill. I have had that numbing spice. I call them deathballs. Are you serious about cooking in oil from human sewers? I am not doubting you, but that semms quite extraordinary, like the whole population would die from it.
A reply > KM is on the edge man. They just set free 500 some dogs here marked for meat consumption. The animal rights people, most Buddhist, were even maligned as criminals by forum commenters.
> Watch out for the bugs that they eat here too. They actually charge you for the bugs in your food. > all I would need to do is locate the red pepper section and buy a 50 gallon barrel of it, and that should last me a week or less. Also to get that real Yunnan taste I would buy a gallon of cheap oil >and use it over and over and over until it is a gooey black tar. I now now have the foundation for authentic Yunnan style food
> KM. Bad food. Bad service. Could get good Cantonese food in Beijing no problem, but here they can't even cook other Chinese style foods. > it sucks. Dai food can better be described as dish after dish super spicy grass. The concept that every single dish at one of these Dai places can only be SPICY, SPICY, SPICY... covered in red spicy >sauce and red peppers may be a sign of superb cooking to some people, but not to me. Yunnan people are just so wrapped in the "marvel" of their food culture here (basically noodle soup with spicy >crap all in it)
> Crap is crap, in NYC, Berlin, London, New Delhi or Kunming. And the world center for crappy food is Kunming!
> Because the people here (and in Yunnan in particular) are xenophobic and can't conceive of eating anything other than the same things they have eaten all of their lives three times a day. And that is >rice noodles, rice noodles, rice noodles. Gadzooks. Anybody who thinks this stuff is wonderful has not had a good cheeseburger in way too long.
> I am here you tell you the facts: old and stale food, all spicy, spicy, spicy, cooked in dirty greasy sewer oil and covered in MSG. Can't even get a decent bowl of white rice here. Always cold >and hard. Rice in the east of China is totally different, not because of the rice but because of the people cooking it. Maybe some people here like burgers made with weird green and brown filler >weird Yunnan herbs that when put all together taste sort of like cow dung (not that I have eaten actual cow dung, but I am not sure what that was
> Why do I have to struggle to get the basics of a half ass decent meal (rice noodles in spicy gutter oil -and I would say the vast majority of restaurants use that stuff, not a minority, and ALL of >them in my area do-is not a decent meal). I cannot, anywhere in my area of Kunming.
> The school I work out told us they were going to take us to a Christmas dinner at some big ass 5 star hotel. I have had some meals there before and while expensive were pretty darned good. One issue here was that there had been some complaints to the school from other teachers that all the meals the school took us to were too spicy and a bit strange. Plates of spicy greasy fatty pickled chicken feet.
I was over my moodiness and was happy and my wife even was a bit concerned as I seemed a bit too jocular and merry. It was not like me to be so ecstatic, she warned to not over expect. TIC, right? But why not be happy, right? Why not have hope!
Well, dear friends, when the day came it was not the Christmas dinner, but the Christmas lunch buffet we were to meet for. And that was the end of it all. Life went from Technicolor to b/w in an instant. Much of my bitterness these days can be traced back to this nightmare meal. That one day. The food we had was nothing that was on the dinner menu, which no doubt cost more than the all you can meal we got. And what morsels did we have for our Christmas meal at the 5 star buffet? How about BBQ on a stick. Spicy vegetables. Rice. Rice noodle soup. Yes, that is right, mi xian for Christmas. Salads of cucumbers and cherry tomatoes with no dressing. Spicy this. Spicy that. Oily this. Oily that.
And you know what made it all worse? I will tell you. All these damned foreigners there walking around going "oh look at this, look a that! Yummy yummy yummy! So much to choose from, right Bill?
Ah yea, lemme see, I can have this type of noodle soup or that type. I am overwhelmed. They are those happy type who, I feel were equally disappointed, but wanted to make lemonaide out of the lemons that were just thrown in their face. Not me my friends. When the one lady asked me if I was excited by the selection I told her "no, not really. I could get all this in the school cafeteria and it will taste better there and be warm (since they no have the concept at buffets in China of keeping the food warm, just throwing in a serving pan and watching it get hard and cold). This is a bait and switch, they said Christmas dinner with HAM and now I am eating BBQ on a stick. Ohhhhhhh, I can't get that out in the filthy back alley ways behind the school every single day of my life!!!!" She laughed and walked off but she doesn't like me that much anyway, maybe I am too cheery for her. What a scam!
But the school leaders who set the meal up were happy. "ummmmm.. spicy pork fat slices and oily spicy vegetables! Christmas dinner is so good! Ummm,,,is this what you eat for Christmas back in the USA "Ah yea, spicy chicken head is a staple on our table every holiday."
Svet just be very careful and research research research. In some areas of China the Expats refuse to end up sick in hospital from worms in food and they buy food in a market and carefully cook it at home.
Make sure before you go over to China for extended period to be as healthy as you can. You need a good immune system because you damn well no Tuberculous is easy to catch and unless you want to lose weight and almost die with hole in lung as Indy did, worms in food can be a bitch to rid body of. Cat dog and Rat are far more common than not.
Research before you take any chances. Some really good online sources of where Brits and Muurikan have listed places that probably won't send you to hospital

I have 4 ground stations for Globalstar in China - Spaced almost equally across China albeit you with due diligence can only locate three. My experience with China is limited. Rules on which hotels to stay in and where to eat and even planes to fly on have been under total control of people that send me for work in China. Now it turns out that YOU are totally free to walk up to and get in with your passport into USA or British or even Pakistan embassy or consular offices in China. Do not expect a phone call will work for this information. Not a chance in hell
Walk into and tell reception you would like some help with suggestions on places that are trustworthy for food n drink. China bars as so many bars across Planet Earth will have a bottle of Scotch or whatever and the label don't mean shit cause the refill of say 23 year old Scotch with a Japan knockoff is just so common.
Embassies and Consular offices do have printed resources they will hand out just for the asking OR in a few cases its just Reception to You personally as they read from a list of what is SAFE
China is a polluted hell hole as backward as can be BUT all that aside there are some totally AMAZING places to see and just a walk a few miles in any direction is a good Great thing to do
Just keep in mind that if its a city area where they pile on Red Chiles in mass - It goes back to day of yesterday where spices were all about covering up Rancid unfit food to eat. Smell what they give you to eat and if its loaded with so much Chili You might see if you can get a bowl cup dish plate of whatever without the cover up spices. Indy will claim other wise but a quick look at the very same city he lived in - Beijing or Kunming and all the OTHER Expats beat the shit out of him over all horrid the food really was.
Svet you can try Live Hornets in Pupia form or crawling live Ants sans chocolate as a tasty mouth filling treat and the Chinese expect you to pay them extra for live crawling ants as a condiment

Yea I remember the stories about FAKE Rice and Fake Rice Noodles and the Wine - Indy used to show bottles of wine he was drinking - All Fake counterfeits. So easy to print a label and fill bottle with rotgut.
But remember in China they will sell you the insects WE do our best to rid gardens of.
Bottom line is basically most of the food of Yunnan province and other areas where extra amounts of cheap as fuck hot chilies are added as cover up for rancid disgusting tasteless food. In Amerika one can get tasty quality well prepared Yunnan food. Real chicken instead of Rat meat. Real chicken broth cause any quality Chinese food is never prepared in water cept noodles - Always broth. Its famous as a wedding gift. A whole chicken is always cooked in Chicken broth - In Yunnan they scrape the back alleys for slaughtered remains, because there are no health standards nor do Chinese waste anything INCLUDING the waste - They even make you pay for the added Rat droppings in China.

> *Indy is a regular poster here on GoK who has used several names but always seems to devolve into food fights.
He has a web site where he reviews Kunming food joints. *Indy is also a polyglot and poorly educated in languages. The same for food preparation, or so he says.
*Indy exhibits narcissistic tendencies which usually takes the form of trolling to elicit argumentative responses which he perceives as attacks. He once bought me a Coke at Sals.
Tonyaod replies
For someone that loves to make arguments about what makes food good and browbeat fellow users on GoK for their food sense, or the lack thereof, the reviews written in the *Indyfoodguide lacks the passion that I would expect from someone that explodes in utter disbelief at the mere mention of an affinity for western fast food. Being a polyglot and a Masters, I would almost expect better writing as well.
The reviews read as if someone just recently learned food critiquing on wikihow and is still struggling to apply all the elements in a food review, always seemingly leaving out quite a few details. The reviews are superficial and cursory, as if the entire process is like an annual dental checkup, going through all the motions without actually doing any work.
The typical review reads as follows:
—————————————————-
"Superb is the word that describes almost every aspect of 伊天园 (Yī Tiān Yuán), a Muslim restaurant. From the moment you approach the front door, you know that it will be a very special dining experience. The staff are all dressed impeccably, and perfectly professional and efficient. The food itself is extraordinarily delicious, especially the aged beef hanging just inside of the front door. Other dishes shine as well: try the cow stomach and the fried tofu. The menu is extensive, and anything you order is sure to be heavenly."
————————————————-
While the reviewer might have the impression that the restaurant is "superb" and that it will be a "special dining experience", no details were provided within the review to bolster this impression.
Again, being "dressed impeccably, and perfectly professional and efficient" does not tell me what to expect from the wait staff. Being a Muslim restaurant, should I expect the wait staff to be dressed in ethnic attire or the standard garb that is considered "professional" by Chinese standards but yet falls short of Western standards. If being the latter, what makes it stand out that you made an effort to comment on their dress? An anecdote would be useful here.
"The food itself is extraordinarily delicious" -how so?;
"especially the aged beef hanging just inside of the front door" -what was the name of the dish you've tried and how was it prepared, for as it sits now, it's just a piece of raw meat hanging by the window;
"try the cow stomach and the fried tofu" -again, how should it be prepared and what's the name of the dish I should try?;
"The menu is extensive" -perhaps a range should be given to have a point of reference. BTW, no mention of the beverage menu which might have been helpful, ie, most Muslim (if not all) restaurant prohibit the drinking of alcohol as it is against their religion, does this particular restaurant permit and provide alcoholic drinks?;
"and anything you order is sure to be heavenly" -I have not found any description or indicator within the review that would lead me to make the same conclusion.
One final note, it would seem that there were many glaring omissions for a restaurant that is rated so high (9.8/10). The most obvious is that being a Muslim restaurant, pork is not on the menu. While it can be argued that that is common knowledge, it is part of the dining experience and bears mentioning to set the tone of the review. Defenders of the site might point to professional critiques as being similarly short, however, it overlooks the fact that professional critiques packs in a lot of detail and information despite their briefness, and second, due to space restraints, they are limited in their verbosity. Move over to their personal blog and you'll find a much more detailed review, often on the verge of a full-length article.
On balance, I give the website 1 out of 5 stars for a good effort and having the audacity to tackle such an endeavor. However, the lack of usefulness and meaningful content left me yearning for more, much like how one would feel 3 hours after a large bowl of mixian.
I checked out (Yī Tiān Yuán) the aged beef hanging just inside of the front door was covered with flies and other crawling insects. (Not included in the food review)

Diane. I ate at the wangfuning night market and lost three days work from stomach heaves. The market in my opinion is overpriced. The Chinese push fried insects. The food sits out Luke warm for to long.
Gina. You will need masks because the smog is often chocking.
Gina. Pollution is an ever present problem. People spit and defecate in the streets.
I am an American living in Asia for over 2 years and have been to china 5 times. And it is possible, no matter where you go, to get sick. Poorer countries in Asia (like Thailand or Philippines or Laos) it is well known not to drink the tap water. Even in China, drinking the tap water is asking for trouble
.
You can get sick in China if your not used to the food. Although most of Chinese food is rice and seafood based, if your stomach is not used to the spices or lack of protein in most meals and more bacteria than your body is used to, you can be very ill.
When I ate in restaurants and even some sidewalk vendors in Shanghai, I got very sick. But, the pollution in Beijing can make people sick.
Maybe 35% of people in Beijiing seem to wear those cloth "masks" over their mouths, but I do not think they do much good. After all, what is in the air is going thru that fabric. LOL. If you travel to China I would worry about getting sick. Maybe bring some Pepto for a groggy stomach and purchase bottle water in China (which is readily available) One problem you will run into. Counterfeit bottles of water filled from the taps.
Miss Priscilla, Shanghai
Chinese food varies wildly. Many Chinese restaurants are of the most wretched standards, and it's no wonder that it causes spontaneous explosive diarrhea of the worst kind. You have to be crazy to eat the street vendors food. No one washes their hands. What can you expect when they do not have running hot water to wash. Chinese seem afraid of using soap.

I have not used gokunming in probably one or 1.5 years. I still get email or notices of PM's from people there so of course I have to log in to read and reply to the PM's.
I was frankly shocked 2day to read many many new posts all about him. That lasting impression LOLOLOL - Busy with work in prep to split to Comic Con SANS even a pager and for sure NO Cell phones. I have contracts with clients that demand some form of contact and they will get my hotel room number - Even thinking of using another room in another hotel a client provides to escape that other phone.
There are many pages on that one post but if I dare look I will get little work done AND THAT IS NOT Going to happen. I must say that in the 5 star hotels I stayed in for Beijing, the food was more than ok - May not have been original but I did NOT get sick. I cook a lot of Asian foods and took years of classes in Chinese mixed with Japan and Pho's of Vietnam. In Vietnam I ate a lot of Pho and never once got sick. I love Pho and once tried to talk becky in2 giving it a go. Don't have a clue if she has tried it.

I need to ad. Making Pho at home the real Pho is frankly good to do JUST ONE TIME in a Life Time. FAR to much work to buy the bones you need. The stock takes a couple of days.
Ramen at home - I do a lot of home made Ramen but I do fake the stock all to often with short cuts. This movie is good 2view and I highly recommend it for beyond the cooking part
Somethings like Peking Duck which I made at home just ONCE - Wayyyyyy to much work when one can go to a place and buy one - And having to go out to buy a Bike tire pump to pump air into the skin to separate from chicken Yikes. Also making a vertical oven just for that one time was wayyyy to much work.

> Now that I have a string of international businesses, I plan to travel and check on them all regularly, so yes.
Hot dog stands with Hot Dogs made from real dog meat and to cut costs contains rat meat, is not worthy of going beyond dumb as fuck Chinese who eat that kind of shit.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Public Security for the People's Republic of China announced a three-month crackdown on food safety violators, some of it involving rat, fox and, mink flesh being sold as lamb meat. They reportedly uncovered 383 cases of meat-related crime and made 904 arrests of people suspected of selling 20,000 tons of fake, diseased, or counterfeit meat.
Is this the first time food fraud has been committed on this scale?
Not only is it not the first time, it's not the first time this year. In mid-January, traces of horse DNA were discovered in the meat supply of Familjen Dafgard, a Swedish company that provides meat to the UK branches of Burger King, Nestlé, Tesco, IKEA, and Taco Bell, among others. It resulted in a massive recall (1,675 pounds of meatballs to IKEA alone) and a lot of bad press for all the companies involved.
But this won't affect me, right? This is just overseas. The U.S. is still horse and rat meat-free.
Mmmmmmaybe.
Oh Jesus Christ! Are you serious? I've been eating rats?
