Just something I thought you might be interested in.
The Zetas in Mexico are apparently now stopping busses on the road and forcing people to choose between joining them and death. Conscription, really, since they're pretty much the government there.
If you join, it's menial work and they use your family to blackmail you.
Any ways, it's hardly a dignified death. They saw your head off. Not quickly, either. They draw it out. It's pretty much half over by the time you stop blubbering.
Interestingly enough, most people choose death - they keep finding mass graves, with 80 or 90 headless bodies in them.

There's videos of their killings around, but I don't have any links. You can look around for them, though. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Mexico is never gonna get their shit straight. Its sad really considering how close they are to decent countries like America and Canada, we are far from perfect, but I can ride a bus without fear of losing my head.

Another reason to end the drug war.

Troops should be cleaning out Juarez right now, rather than being in Afghanistan.
I'll bet that more people have died in Juarez in the past 2 years than in Afghanistan over the past 8 or 9. A quarter of the population has, I've heard.

The Mexican president is a piece of shit and a liar.

How much of the problem do you think is due to nafta and similar policies

> The Mexican president is a piece of shit and a liar.

I've had discussions in the past with Mexicans currently living in Mexico. They explained to me that is not just a political problem, but more of a social problem. The very culture itself is corrupted. Lying, cheating, stealing, its all very normal practice occurring everyday, from the top, down to the local schools. They are proud Mexicans and good people, but they can't deny the heart of the issue is the culture. When a problem is that deep...

wat do?

They contribute to it. But not by a huge amount, imo.
I don't know how much a policy like NAFTA would affect drug cartels.

You can't do much, actually. But the thing is, it didn't have to be quite this bad. Whole towns are overrun by cartels.
I doubt Mexico will ever be a great country. But it can be cleaned up.
Everything contributes to it. Some things can be cancelled out.

The people are in no position to do anything realistically. Even if they did, everything would quickly be the same.

The government will never do anything. Ever.

And the gov't won't, you're right. But other people should. I'm serious, American/Canadian troops should be in Mexico right now, rather than Afghanistan.

@94,266 (D)
It does. But what contributes to poverty?

The military is not a toy bud, we can't swing it around like a dolly. What Mexico needs is massive social programs, infrastucture and investments in education. Big problems require big solutions, but the military doean't actyally fix anything. They just break stuff. If you want to fix social problems, then you have to address social issues. Grow up and leave.

Never gonna happen. I think our troops should be here in the US doin' thangs. I'm sick of our economy sucking while we spend trillions on backwards ass sand nations that won't amount to shit. Build fucking housing for the homeless HERE with that money, do something HERE. We're not gonna be able to help anyone, much less ourselves if we can't fix shit here.

Mexico has always been an unstable place. For example, the border town Ciudad Juarez is particularly notorious. Over serval years dozens of mass graves have been found around it, and amnesty international estimates that 370 women have been murdered there. In this case, the police were outright useless, and Canada and America stepped in and did most of the investigating on it.

Normally I'd disagree with you on sending troops in, but I think that parts of Mexico could use it. Their government is either too weak or simply doesn't care. It'd cause a diplomatic shitstorm though, so I doubt it'll happen.

I'm not questioning your source. I'm questioning the generality that Mexico is as bad as sensational media makes it out to be. The border cartel problem is not representative of all of mexico. Mexico has larger social problems then just cartel violence. You might as well categorize all of America as being under siege by gang violence because some gangs are killing each other in LA.

Social problema can't be handled with a stick --and you'll never rid mexico of drug violence as long as they are socially incompetent and allow their citizens to go without basic civil services, education and health.

Sure, border crime is bad, but if young mexican males had more good options for a beter life, then they wouldn't have a huge pool of underemployed poor men to 'recruit.'

The best way to fix a society, is to provide for it's people. And we certainly aren't going to bully it out of them. We tried that in Afghanistan, hurr.

True. My apologies.

I see.
Still, though. Providing social services, education, and health may prevent the recruiting of many new members.
But that doesn't get rid of the current ones.

I can't see that happening anytime soon either, though. I doubt that their government would be able to effectively implement those changes (maybe eventually, but it'd take quite some time), or that any other country will provide enough help to make a noticeable difference.

But I suppose I agree that a military solution wouldn't work out either. Too impractical.

It does not get rid of the current ones, no. But they will always be replaced as long as the mexican government doesn't work for the people. It will require massive changes in orser to do remove the problem. Everything else only contains it.

@previous (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)
No, but many small steps in the right direction eventually gets you to your destination. Social problems are the hardest to repair. Just look at American Reconstuction after the civil war. Many of those problems were not solved for 80 years, and some persist to this day. But, without a goal imcluding civil liberties and community development no amount of policing will ever stop the problem in it's entirety.
