I crashed my car a few weeks ago. One of my friends, who I've only known for about 5 months was in the car. Before he left and we were speaking, he put his hand on my head (when he was standing in front of me) and sort of ruffled up my hair. We were at a party a couple of weeks ago and he did it again. I don't mind it, I'm just wondering what this actually means? Is it a gesture of intimacy or empathy? I dunno. I think if I did this to one of my other friends they would move away or something, it's weird, like a connection or something. I can't put my finger on it.

The hand on the head and the ruffling of the hair is his way of demonstrating to others that he places you in a subordinate role and that he can do mildly annoying things to you without you retaliating. This can only be construed as a clear and public affront to your dominance. The only appropriate response is to immediately jump up on a higher surface while snarling and growling before tackling and choking him into unconsciousness.
