The older generations get too stuck in their ways that eventurally their "wisdom" is eventurally obsolete. Much like the flow of old to new, older generations get to a point where they out live their usefulness while the newer generations improve society.
In Eskimo society, elders would willfully walk onto an iceberg and wait for a polar bear to get them, because if they stayed with the tribe they put everyone at risk.
