If Switzerland can do okay without the EU, why can't Britain? From what I see the government is making it out like if Britain leaves the EU there won't be any more trade and there'll be plague and pestilence and Britain will be thrown back to the Bronze Age.

Because Switzerland is a tiny country, with a much smaller economy, in an entirely different position. People tout Switzerland and Norway as good examples of what a Britain outside the EU ought to look like, while forgetting Norway and Switzerland still have to abide by the same EU rules we're trying to 'escape' from, while having absolutely zero influence.
Both Switzerland and Norway have urged the UK to remain ("Switzerland has a warning for Brits thinking they can fall back on a special trade deal with the EU if they vote to leave the bloc: You will still have to play by the Union’s rules.").

Wrong. Norway doesn't have to yeld to EU fishing quoters which means only Norwegian fishing boats my fish in their warmers. Currently Spanish and French fishermen can come into UK waters and take part of the British quoter.

Do you have a source for that, btw? Norway might be outside the CFP, but they have a handful of agreements with the EU, as part of the 'Northern Agreements' alongside Iceland (I think?).
To be completely honest, I don't really think fishing quotas matter, nor the fact foreign vessels fish in our waters. You might find this an interesting read.

The Leavers know what a Brexit could do to the UK economy, and shouting down your opponents as 'scaremongerers' is an easy way out, I imagine. They can happily ignore the majority of economists, that way. :)
I think this debate has been a lot more level-headed and sensible than, say, the Scottish referendum. What a mess that was.

Both countries abide by EU single market rules, but get no say whatsoever. Sure, as Farage says, they've made the sovereign choice to abide by these regulations and standards, as opposed to the rules being forced upon them, but so what? The end result is the same.

What difference does it make then? Why not "exit" the EU to make the plebs happy, and just continue business as usual under the same rules? I'd take anything Switzerland says with a grain of salt. They have a history of looking out for themselves first.

I followed the Scottish thing closely and they were saying the same thing, that Scotland would be isolated and there would be no more trade and it would go straight back to the dark ages, etc, and I thought "well it can't be that bad, I mean the Republic of Ireland is doing okay outside the UK so why not Scotland?"
I guess the debate looks strange to Americans because we do secession with bullets, not ballots.

Of course but I don't see why an independent Scotland in the EU should fare any worse than an independent Ireland in the EU. Ireland seems to have plenty of trade and be more-or-less on par with the UK in terms of standard of living.
What got me was all the talk about a "painful divorce". Like if Scotland is no longer ruled from Westminster they'll have to rebuild Hadrian's wall and never speak to each other again. There was talk of currency issues but I don't see why a Scottish pound couldn't be kept pegged to sterling (like the Irish pound was for 50 years) or Scotland could switch to Euros.

I know that but I mean Ireland is pretty strong evidence that a country can leave the UK and not become a total basket case. I don't see why if Scotland left the United Kingdom (but stayed in the EU) it would be any worse off than Ireland.
