Topic: Why do people still use the oppressive imperial measuring system?

Green !BEERiVqJJw started this discussion 10 years ago #52,948

It's so stupid. How many gallons are in a quart? 12? I have no idea. Metric makes so much more sense. There are 1000ml in a litre, 100 centimetres in a metre, 1000g in a kg. With imperial, you go faffing about with weird numbers. 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, god knows how many yards in a mile. metric is just better.
Poll option Votes Percentage Graph
Metric. 6 67%
Imperial. 3 33%

quarts are easy because the name comes from "quarter" as in one fourth of a gallon

what gets weird is that the US gallon is different from the UK gallon because the US gallon was based on the UK wine gallon but the UK changed their standard gallon away from the wine gallon after the US revolution so the US stuck with the wine gallon variant

they even have different numbers of fluid ounces in those gallons

I must have looked up the definition of the acre seven times and still can't remember the basis long term

For the record NASA officially switched to the Metric system circa 1990.
Circa 1999 NASA launched the Lockheed Martin, Mars Climate Orbiter.

Minor problem with that because NASA software with constants and variables in Metric were parsed with Lockheed's navigation commands in English units.
This worked not so good when thrusters were fired. Orbiter failed to orbit and burned up. Web said the cost loss was $327.6 million and of course the scientific data never happened.

There are other examples - Mistrakes are made with one country using one unit of measure n the other using the other.

And B4 anyone asks I had NADA 2do with that mission or ANY Mars mission.

I looked that up and it says you're 98 pounds? That's the weight of a child. The last time I heard an adult weigh that much was a guy who was 3 feet tall. Maybe if you're short and anorexic.

The real problem with metrication in the US is unit conversion. Kids learn the metric system and then they have to convert inches to cm and °f to °c and it's retarded T(°F) = T(°C) × 9/5 + 32 confuses kids and they associate that confusion with metric. Teach metric only and don't even talk about English units.

USA June 7 Primaries - The one that put my teeny tiny State of California in the spot light and put Hillary Clinton in a position to make History.

Poll numbers towards the last week were all in exact close agreement and all inside the same margin of error with Clinton winning by only +2 - I had a huge amount of money riding on this election and have to give up 3 points. Was more than worried. Discussed here on MC with Metæ and ended up even more worried.

Bottom line is SHE WON and the other guy Bernie Sanders ends of as:

I took two days quick vacation for total celebrations with lots of friends who also took days off of work. Drank 2much Champagne and ate so much Sushi and other great Sea Foods and well I got so fucking far behind in work its cut into my new play time.

TIME to hire some help cause I was going to anyway with Comic Con coming UP and this year its going to be every day and every hour and every minute which I have never done before
