Topic: Is Windows 10 any good?

Nexi !tRAnsGiRLo started this discussion 10 years ago #52,815

Windows keeps harassing me on upgrading and I am getting tired of it. So I would like to know if it is honestly any good to upgrade to and if it is worth it? Otherwise I will just stay with 7 since it has treated me so well.

yes, it's great, just upgrade. don't skip the good years, skip the bad ones. xp was great, vista was shit, 7 was great, 8 was shit, 10 is great. just get it, it's the good one. don't be a fuck-up and skip 10 and get the next clusterfuck.

the only bad thing about it is the borderline-malicious near-forcing of the update
if you get thru that it's pretty great win10/10

As someone who has used Linux as a primary OS for the past 15 years and only grudgingly kept a Windows partition for a few pieces of choice software, I will say that Windows 10 isn't bad. If anything, it's worlds better than 8. Don't be afraid.

It's not, though. Metro is shit, but if you install classic start it is a plain and simple upgrade over 7. And 10 is indeed clearly an upgrade over 8, though I'm not running it myself yet. Soon™

Do a clean upgrade. Or just get a new PC that has it preinstalled.

I prefer Start8 myself but I agree. Windows 10 has this weird thing where you can run linux right over top it. I don't know how it works but I hear it's something like WINE.

Yeah it seems super interesting, also native docker I think. Main reason I'm planning to upgrade soon. Anyway, I prefer classic start (with a customized icon) because it's free. Of course you can pirate Start8 but I prefer free software over pirated paid software. And honestly, my experience is that it mimics the windows 7 start menu and search perfectly so I'm not sure what else I could want.

I installed it and I'm pretty happy with it. I don't miss anything from 7. The user interface is fine and there's nothing horrible or broken.

Go to a best buy and try messing around on a 10 machine for a bit. My mom's laptop somehow updated on it's own and when I tried to roll it back it didn't do anything except waste 2 hours removing the rollback option and all of her programs -including Office.

When I installed it it broke my ability to adjust the brightness on my computer and also made f.lux stop functioning. Eventually a patch fixed it.

Nexi !tRAnsGiRLo (OP) replied with this 10 years ago, 1 hour later, 8 hours after the original post[^] [v] #690,000

So basically all of you say that it is worth the upgrade? Can I downgrade if I do not like it?

FuckAlms !vX8K53rFBI replied with this 10 years ago, 2 hours later, 11 hours after the original post[^] [v] #690,025

@previous (Nexi !tRAnsGiRLo)
I wouldn't count on it. Like I said, try playing around on a store PC before you let it adulterate your own system. Additionally, the downgrade function is only available for 30 days after upgrading.

I've only really used it for about 5 minutes with my mom's laptop and gave up when I couldn't find freecell. I'm just not an overall fan of anything related to tablets, touchscreens, "smart" phones, social media, cloud computing, minimalist GUI design, etc. There's also the concerns of phoning home and data collection and integrated ads, but minichan will be quick to say that those can be disabled in settings and have probably been backported to 7 and 8 anyway.

Basically, I wanted 7, I got 7, and I'm sticking with 7, so people who can't accept that can go fuck themselves.

I am stuck with Win 7 until IT depts switch over and Companies take a long time to upgrade. Its a massive amount of work for IT depts.

This play only PC was Win 7 until I got talked in2 being a guinea pig for 8.1 then 8.2 and at least I talked IT into letting me use the Classic start add on.

In 8.1 it takes some work to do a System Restore and starting the PC in Safe mode - several ways to do it but damn Win 7 and prev versions just quick trigger F8 - In theory F8 still works if your faster than possible on hitting it.

I do, but these computers never access the internet. Everything goes from jumpdrive to jumpdrive and is scanned before hand.
