here in CA if you have no party preference you can get a libertarian, 'American independent', or Democratic Party ballot to vote with for the primary

Most independents/npps are similarly partisan in thought and action, they just avoid the label for whatever reasons. I'm curious. Why not register as dem? Do you think the repubs are likely to produce a candidate that you would likely vote for, or do you think the Dems are somehow not representative of you?

I think this is useless for presidents. Plans always get messed up (I mean just ask yourself how many things in your own life have gone according to plan) and the detailed policy proposals and plans at the beginning of a campaign rarely work out by the end of the administration.
