External SATA, it's basically a place to plug any SATA HDD in, on the outside of your computer.

They make SATA to USB adapters. The problem with those, is they won't work if the drive requires more power than USB 3.0 can provide.

yeah, I have a 2TB drive made for internal use, but my desktop computer doesn't have SATA power.

They make USB/SATA adapters with external power that you can draw from a wall socket.

I had one a long time ago, but I lost it before I got the drive

I've got one of those, but the external power was Molex and required a SATA adapter which got lost, and the power brick died a few months ago.
