I liked that part as a kid, because I felt sorry for Charlie. His affection for his Uncle Joe was actually pretty moving (Tim Burton's remake stripped the story of all its heart). Roald Dahl despised the original film, but I think it has great warmth.
The worst part (a la the OP) is Gene Wilder's violent reaction to Charlie when he chastises him for breaking the rules. I know he's faking, but it's far too over-the-top and cruel.

Some of my favorite parts of this film are the ruthless tactics of the adults in trying to find the tickets, though as a kid I didn't understand those scenes.
