Topic: I successfully mended my first seam today.

Maddy !kCITGirlXc started this discussion 10 years ago #52,538

The dress I wanted to wear had a torn seam, so I decided I may as well try to fix it. Other than threading the needle, everything went well. Not the prettiest fix ever, but it'll do.

No, I stitched it several times.

You should get a needle threader. They work very well and are dirt cheap.

I actually have one of those, I just didn't know how to use it. I just looked it up, and learned how. Thanks for telling me what it was.

nice! i've been doing that too, fucking with my clothes to make them cooler

you should defs practice some, get some fabric scraps for free/cheap at a fabric store and stitch them together

Maddy !kCITGirlXc (OP) replied with this 10 years ago, 6 minutes later, 4 hours after the original post[^] [v] #686,210

@686,194 (lost soul)

It can be daunting at first, this isn't the first time I tried.

@previous (chili dog !!81dzJNNYL)

That actually sounds really cool, and I actually enjoy the act of sewing. Now that I can actually do it, that is.

have some fun with fabric dye and patches, too! also you can unstitch the hem on something, give it a run through the washer+dryer, it'll be nice and softly frayed at the bottom. then you can sew a line a little bit above that so it won't fray past that

What's daunting for me is the machine and putting the thread through it

I don't even have a machine, I did it by hand. My mom is really good at using her machine, but it definitely looks like it takes some getting used to.

it does
if you have access to ur mum's machine it's totally worth getting to know how to use it, again using fabric scraps until you get it
and if you do get rlly into sewing, a used machine can be p cheap, $65 on kijiji

My mom lives in another state :/
It's definitely something I'll look into, as I get better. Making my own clothes is probably the best option for me, since I'm so tall.

Sewing isn't hard once you understand how to load the machine with thread and how to clear it when it jams up. That is the part that takes learning. The biggest thing about using a machine is getting a rhythm and moving your hands at the same speed as the fabric is feeding through the machine. Go get some thread and cheap fabric and some patterns at Michael's and make some pajamas or a robe to start out with. It is fun and pants aren't very hard.

Don't fault yourself if your seams look kinda shitty at first, they always do.
