A few weeks ago, it was successfully argued that the US Constitution only protects free speech from the American government, it does not apply to corporations, businesses or non-government institutions. Does this mean that other Constitutional rights may be openly violated by non-government agencies? For example, can a private security company detain and imprison you for indefinite periods without due process? History appears to say so: bounty hunters can break into your home and arrest you without a warrant, and restaurant employees can strip search customers they suspect of breaking the law.

No, there's no violation there, as newspapers have the Constitutional right to print whatever they choose. However, you've avoided discussing my question. Can private institutions subject people to search, seizure and imprisonment without due process?

Are you mixing up constitutional rights with violations of the law? So like, if the police enter your house without knocking, and start looking around, and pick up a suitcase and take it back to the police station, that is a violation of your fourth amendment rights. If let's say you hire a cleaning service that only has permission to be there when you are, and they enter your house without your permission, and snoop around and take some of yuor valuables, that's trespassing, breaking and entering, theft, etc. Violations of criminal statutes, not of our constitutional rights.

Yes, basically. But the thing is, there are also civil laws. So if you violate the constitution, criminal laws, and civil laws at the same time, it is again illegal. You need to violate two and only two for this trick to work.
