Topic: thinking of getting an e-reader for my dad for father's day

hamfist !0Ynig1RSDc started this discussion 10 years ago #52,337

but i don't know if it's a good investment. i just can't think of much decent literature that would appeal to a 53 year old mainstream republican. any suggestions?

E-readers aren't only for consuming obnoxious middle brow literature. Get him a Kindle and a subscription to WSJ.

Wait, are you saying that he doesn't read anything decent because he's an older Republican or that you don't know what he reads because he's an older Republican?

> 53 year old mainstream republican

Fix him up with Monica. First buy him a box of cigars.

Does he have this. According to Trump it's the 2nd greatest book ever written in the history of the universe.

Maybe you should just get him something that he likes instead of something that meets your approval?

i want him to read stuff that at least challenges him a little. if he doesn't like the books i get him he doesn't have to read them. i'm not forcing him or anything. i just want to find middle ground so we can have something to talk about

That's probably better.
Not being mean, but if you were to fill up the Kindle with books for your tastes, you'd probably look like an ass.
It would be like if someone bought you a Kindle and filled it with Bill O'Reilly or The Hunger Games or whatever makes you feel hawty and angry.

If his dad watches O'Reilly - He has a huge number of books available - hamfist might even find one of them interesting. The Killing of series.

i don't plan on filling it up with my taste, i just wanted to have a few books that we could both enjoy.
maybe i should load it with 20 copies of infinite jest as a joke lol. not really but that would be a cool prank

but yea i get your point. i would be an asshole to just fill it with what i like

I picked up a copy of 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius for my father a few years ago and he loved it. He's Southern Baptist + conservative, a bit older than your dad, but close in age. Fiction is a bit iffier, but humor and nonfiction seem to be safer bets IME.
