Topic: Attn USAmericans. Is it true the traditional American shopping mall is dying out?
Anonymous A started this discussion 10 years ago#52,255
I heard that the traditional American shopping mall like the ones we saw in the movies from the 80's and 90's are dying out which seems to to a non USAmerican because large shopping malls are being built up all over the world.

indoor malls seem to be fine but there's not a place in this country that I haven't seen a strip mall with most of the businesses closing and/or getting replaced by chains

In defense of strip malls. When I am looking for an ethnic restaurant, for say Pho or Thai or Korean food. Its always going to be located in a strip mall. Regular malls have fast food but from my experience never anything special. Hot dog on a stick etc Yuck.

We have a strip mall near my home that has two bars, a thrift shop, a tattoo parlour, a Chinese restaurant, a stripper shoe store, a screen printing store, an Indian supply store,a Pakistani convenience store, a pizza place and a whore house.

Point is the A. Not a choice. In my under 20 mile zone and I am not kidding. There are 100 plus strip malls (guestiment) Each of those strip malls have competing Chinese restaurants. Each has multiple choices of Thai or Korean. One Chinese place might be mostly Diem Sums. Next door with a different owner its Hong Kong style Sea Food. Next door to that its Schezuan. Across the street Japanese market in a strip mall.
You have a Mall that supplies Indians? How much do they cost and do they do housework or cooking?

the Asian strip mall in my area is consistently busy and I've never seen a business there close
Wait just one. a fish store
But it's a big strip mall and it does very well and that's where i go for pho and there's this Chinese run Japanese style ramen place that has more authentic Japanese food than most of the stupid sushi bars around

Down this way Ramen places are springing up almost every month. Even one and I have not tried this place yet because well because of this
Its about 15 miles North of me - "DISCLAIMER: The Whet Noodle is not a traditional ramen house. We ask that you keep an open mind and sense of humor."
Damn difficult for me to break from tradition and have a sense of humor about Ramen - I do at home with the packaged stuff by adding a world of stuff to the pot - Veggies n left over meats in frig - My last Garbage Ramen was beyond amazing but it was loaded with left over chicken and Chinese bar-b-Q roast pork and Fried shrimp with heads still on -
Hummmmmmm just maybe given GF's want something special for dinner b4 our planned evening 2nite - Yep ok mind is made up and will show them the web site - "PICK YOUR BROTH"
Duck shoyu Hope to see if they can toss in some Duck bits in the mix
AH Duck is an option for the meat - Duck $12.00 for a bowl of Ramen

Funny thing about how information and I mean all information on Planet Earth is coalesced. Its best done with multiple people putting A+B+C+ together.
And sometimes it comes with patience and sometimes with just pure dumb luck. OR in one imfamous case a poster here used a web site that had a set of forums. One that advertised self as totally Mod free. So sure it ended up with illegal content. So owners of the web site to protect selves or so they thought (Dumb of them) They showed the IP of each poster in full view - Well a very low IQ person that posts here apparently had no clue wot those sets of number meant - person kept changing the moniker YET the numbers remained the same - And well with his IP available and on a search - Yep
So anyway - Wot it takes is HELP - Its just no fun to have to do all the work - Takes a TEAM. Team work is good.
Not 2 many minutes left 2day to play and multi-task with work - Big evening plans - Going to try this quirky Ramen and if it does NOT live up to reviews WE have a back up - Can just push food aside and in less than 5 minutes end up at a Pho place we enjoy - No time for bad food in my life - No way to start early evening eating just cause it was paid for
Guess you have no clue how people share - Even in email- Even stuff I wood NEVER post cause its just so fucking sad - Stuff frankly I wish I had not been told and it was person to person not some 2nd hand stuff.

Two views and sizes of Strip Malls all in the same hood - Get eye glasses A bowl of Pho (If you have never had a bowl of Pho its a MUST!) or Sushi at the other place or Work boots or for your Tranny buds they can get nails done - Dont have a clue wot Kim's salon offers but probably hair - Fans for your place or rent a place or buy a house in hood - There are probably 5 of these on just one block or 10 if you count the other side of the street.

Probably 3 mins or so away is this one - Betting this mall is 100% owned by a Vietnamese family - So again a Pho joint and another is a full on Viet restaurant probably without Pho and get your teeth fixed - water place is? could be a small market or just water lead or unleaded and ?

These properties are mosty parking lots and roads to and from the parking lots. Freeways appear to occupy the land surrounding it all. Most of the land seems to be dedicated to coming and going from small parcels of earth.

This very tiny corner of the 2nd largest Mall in USA (Mall of America) is anchored by
Best Buy
Forever 21
L.L.Bean
Macy's
Marshall's
Nordstrom
Sears
None NOT One of these major stores can be found in the same hood as the Strip mall joints in hood I prev showed

Not a bad description of Kerney Mesa which is hood of strip malls I showed pics of - I revise my number to say there are probably 250 strip malls in just this one hood - With Monster Asian Markets that are trip- quadtriple the size of normal super markets - And it is bounded by 2 parallel freeways and a freeway South n North of the area.

Sears are so damn ugly. Been a few years since I have been inside one. For a couple of recent lessees of a house and a condo I use as the beginning of my Trump style real estate empire - I did buy kitchen appliances via web and the total order included free delivery and of course set up. Never had to step into the store. One Frig on delivery a month later - failed to freeze ice cubes. One call and Sears came out and decided to replace the frig with a new one because cost of fixing was more than just putting in a new one.
My lessee called me to tell me they changed the order with a check up front to sears for a more expensive model. So I made out cause of course its still my property when they decide to leave.
Based on my last in store visit to Sears I said to self - This company going to be out of biz quickly - Death will come to them but slowly it seems.

Worked in a mall for many years...the rents have become astronomical its no longer cost effective esp for independents and smaller chains. They have to charge so much for their goods and services just to cover the rent. Too bad...
