Forums like the ones you see ran in PHP or forum softwares such as Simple Machines, vBulletin, and even ProBoards.

Besides, those sort of forums still exist, but I'll agree that social media has taken a toll on smaller boards.
I still use a very active forum that uses vBulletin (almost 50k users, several million posts). It feels antiquated, but it works well for the site's purposes.
