I suspect that this topic is some sort of a ruse, but I'll play along.
His success gives me an impression that America has a sizeable number of people who enjoy his extreme, blowhard rhetoric. Though I also don't think that this reflects too badly on America either. Every country has people like that, but I don't think there's enough of them that he'll win.

@OP
The American voting public can be compared to a homeless man rifling through a dumpster. Trump is the three day-old piece of cake he chooses over a freshly discarded plate of lima beans.

The fact he has popular appeal and commands a decent following isn't too surprising. He's charismatic, even if he speaks at a Primary School level. I must admit I didn't expect him to be the Republican nominee, though -- his was a clown candidacy, in my mind. He's a buffoon. I think it makes the GOP even more of a joke.
Why is he orange though? Please just answer that.

It is a clumsy attempt to get the youth vote, which Trump believes he can do by trying to look tanned.

He speaks that way and repeats himself to get through to the dense twats that'll end up voting for him. Although, I'd still pick Trump over Shillary, so I may very well be one of those aforementioned dense twats.

I'd honestly have to vote for Trump. Hillary has based her campaign on lies and deceit and lets opinion polls choose her stance on every subject debated. Trump is honest, and therefore trustworthy. Hillary is hiding her true agendas and is such a bad candidate that the only person she could possibly beat is a buffoon like Trump. Hillary is a puppet, and Trump is a muppet.
Trump has made some bad decisions and rash statements, but he stands behind what he says and you know it's not just political bluffing when he says something. Because what he says often hurts his campaign, but at least you know he is a real person with real thoughts and opinions about things. I say better the devil you know, because no one knows Hillary, only the public persona fabricated by a team of analysts that has been specifically designed to take control of the most powerful country in the world. And they told her to smile more, or something...
