Sounds largely autobiographical.

Sounds terribly patrician...

they're all looking for some kind of escapism, and some of the plot revolves around them taking a "virtual road trip" in which they log onto a second life server with a car and traverse the virtual landscape. i'm going to have to add another element though because 3 guys looking at a screen isn't terribly compelling

That's interesting. Will it be a horror story?

You have enough of an idea to get started. VR is just a different form of escapism in the end, much like drugs, religion, or even the internet for instance.
Maybe consider what they're escaping from as individuals. That might help you flesh it out some and drive the story.
Then when you get to the conclusion you might consider was the escapism useful or did it make things worse for the individuals? Did it resolve anything?
Pretty much all stories follow a very basic formula, you've got a large part of it figured out, you just need to ruminate a bit more.
Or just start writing and see where it goes, if you're serious about it, there are bound to be revisions.
Maybe ask yourself what you're trying to tell your audience with the story.
