faye wong - di-dar (1995)
7/10
a very solid pop record from china. more traditional and not as dreamy as its successor restless, which makes some of the tracks rather forgettable (not bad by any means, but better serving as background music). the b-side is where the record really blooms. the track 'maybe' is absolutely beautiful and worth the price of admission alone. makes me eager to dive into wong's earlier works. definitely a record i'll revisit.

No it wasn't, that was me (if you're referring to the series of 50 reviews of albums like Tool and Pink Floyd).

codeine - what about the lonely (2013)
6/10
codeine is a great band. they dropped two excellent albums and an ep, which have become cult classics of sorts for sad weirdos like me. they have a crushing sound that tends to go from quiet to loud, somewhat like pixies. what about the lonely is a live album released when they had a reunion tour back in 2012. it manages to capture the raw emotion of codeine's work, but the live renditions are very close to how they sound on the album. is this a bad thing? not necessarily, but (in my opinion, at least) live albums should have this kind of sexy energy to them that's hard to capture in the studio. what about the lonely strays very little from the albums, effectively making it more of a greatest hits compilation than anything else. this complaint might seem petty (and maybe it is), but having listened to all of codeine's studio release front to back numerous times, i kind of wanted something new. i can't really recommend this to hardcore fans, but if you want to give codeine a try, this isn't the worst place to start out.

elizabeth fraser of cocteau twins did guest vocals on one of her albums, and i'm a pretty big fan of cocteau twins so i figured i'd check faye wong out. glad i did

phew - phew (1981)
4/10
i'm not a huge post-punk fan but i like to dabble in the genre every now and then. i like the 80's. phew is a japanese post-punk artist. i like japan. but this is a weird release. not compellingly weird, though. kind of dull. the disjointed synths and goofy vocals don't really do anything for me. i don't know if "goofy" is a totally apt description for the vocal delivery, but it's certainly not orthodox. overall, phew falls flat. in fact, i'd go as far as to say that i dislike phew. it just isn't interesting. not my cup of tea.

james ferraro - marble surf (2008)
6/10
it's basically the same lo-fi sound being looped for 40 minutes straight with little variation, but it's strangely hypnotic.

neil young - tonight's the night (1975)
6/10
not a big fan of neil young's honky tonk-ish country side. i'm not terribly opposed to honky tonk or country, but neil young doesn't really do anything interesting with the formula. and it's not like he's making astonishingly tight country rock classics that perfect the genre either - come on baby let's go downtown being a possible exception. trying to think of more words but honestly this album just doesn't do much for me. tired eyes is pretty good.
