Topic: My blood pressure has gotten strange fora.

Metæ started this discussion 10 years ago #51,832

It used to be I'd have a high systolic and normal diastolic pressure (ie 160/85) but lately my systolic has dropped and my diastolic has gone up, just did it a minute ago and it's 149/100 with a pulse of 69. What could this mean? Somehow my cardiovascular function has changed but I can't tell if these new values are better or worse. I don't feel any different and I can still do vigorous physical activity.

Wikipedia says pulse pressure (the difference between the two numbers) goes up in elderly people as arteries harden, but mine has gone down. Could my arteries have gotten softer?

Other cause could be congestive heart failure but I don't have any symptoms of that.

I've had high blood pressure for some years now. I haven't had a drink in over a week btw.

I didn't bring up your alcoholism.

With diet change and exercise and for many drugs can clean out the pipes. That will lower blood pressure.

Over a period of how many days is that true?

I always have to review the rules on this. I understand systolic and what it takes to keep it down but am still clueless about diastolic.

This one of the five I looked at makes it clearer and appears you have no worries unless systolic rises in the future.

:( y u lie to meta? The only time either of my readings was close to 180 or 100 I was taken to emergency care, and that was a temporary elevation due to physical trauma, not a constant.

@672,456 (C)
Thanks! I did more research and I may have misinterpreted the figures at first. My pulse pressure is well above the range for heart failure.

My father is an alcoholic. Both of my grandfathers were alcoholics. My brother is an alcoholic. Several aunts and uncles, etc.

I don't think you're a shitty person for being reliant on alcohol, but it's plain to see.

My systolic blood pressure has never been 180. Certainly not constantly. It's usually in the 140s or 150s which is high but not considered a medical emergency.

Yes I often drink more than is recommended, but heavy drinking is not the same as alcoholism. I do often go days or weeks without drinking, depending on if I'm in the mood for it or not.

My writing 180 was a mistake, but not one that changes the thrust of what I said.

@previous (Metæ)
That is a painfully stereotypical defense. I'm glad you don't get the shakes. You're still an alcoholic.

That hurts. When it comes to health issues I try my best to be accurate. On my dads side of the family high cholesterol is a problem. Most of my male relatives use statins and or beta blockers.

I decided to study the situation when it was determined that I needed to have junk removed from my pipes. I hit a med library and worked out a plan for me to follow. It worked. Pipes are clear and my blood pressure and heart rate are much better than when I was a wee teen. NO Drugs other than one hell of a lot of off the shelf Niacin. Serious change of diet and exercise.

Upside of serious exercise is - Runners High which I also get with Jitterbug dancing - IS IS IS Terrific. Can be dangerous on occasions and has been the cause of several pull overs by law enforcement for the appearance of drunk driving. Like TWICE I have passed the cops on the freeway and they were already going faster than the posted speed limit. Or racing away from a light that just turned green from red with me along side the LAW - Cop said hey are you crazy or what? Endorphin's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright then what is the difference between alcoholism and drinking too much? What is the objective criteria to tell one from another?

I mean this is an unwinnable situation. It's like trying to prove you're not gay:

"I'm not gay"
Yeah sure that's just what a closeted gay would say
"But no, dude, I like naked women"
Mmhm that's what they all say
"I have a girlfriend!"
So did Elton John
Etc etc ad nauseam

i think they say in general "things" are a problem when they interfere with your life. depression, drinking, sex addiction, etc.
when it makes you unhealthy because of excess or prevents you from activities you'd normally undertake, i guess.

for alcoholism you can point to symptoms and that's a pretty good indicator, but if someone doesn't have those symptoms and they lead a life free from the interference of drink then i'd say they aren't an alcoholic or turning into one. i think the criteria is open to interpretation until one develops withdrawl symptoms.

Is your drinking controllable? No.

Does it have negative impacts on other parts of your life? Yes.

Could you abstain from drinking without treatment? No.

I'm not an expert, but I'm also not the sort of person who will pretend you're not an addict to avoid conflict. Do what you will with your life.

one should be able to realize 'this is becoming a problem' before they have to face withdrawal symptoms

There is that one easy test for alcoholics. Can they stop drinking for a couple of weeks without a problem.
I drink and I can stop drinking and the only thing I miss is the taste. For work reasons there are weeks that go by where I cannot drink. I always have a bottle of champagne ready for when the special work is over.
