Both answers are right in certain senses.
Shintoism is the best example off the tip of my head where there's a very strong correlation between religion and ethnicity, but still not all Shintoists share the same ethnic background (or nationality), but that's largely a modern development.
Just like how most Jews may share a similar ethnic profile, there'll still be exceptions.
In the end I would still say that religion doesn't equal ethnicity, but there are strong and significant ties between religion and ethnicity all the same.
More importantly, no1cars.
