They're an attempt at capturing the African roots of their people and validating themselves as a people with a real history so they can move on as a culture from having slavery severing their rope, so to speak.
It's very admiral in my opinion, it means the damage from the subjugation of their people and the almost complete elimination of their cultural mores is beginning to finally heal.
