Alex Wood is being sued under the Racial Discrimination Act over a 2013 post he wrote after being asked to leave a Queensland University of Technology computer lab reserved for the use of indigenous students.
"Just got kicked out of the unsigned Indigenous computer room. QUT is stopping segregation with segregation," he posted on a Facebook page called QUT Stalker Space.
The post attracted comments critical of both the incident and the existence of the indigenous-only space.
"I wonder where the white supremacist lab is," wrote another student, Jackson Powell, who is also being sued.
Is this a satire site, like the Australian version of The Onion? There's no way a university would have segregated computer labs.

Important to note suing someone doesn't mean anything really. Svet's girlfriend could sue him for £1,000,000 in emotional distress for spending all his time on the nintendoes, for example.
I'm dismayed by the fact that segregation is now progressive but the stories are lacking some key details: ''why' was Alex Wood kicked out of the indigenous-only computer lab? If he was kicked out on account of skin color then I don't see how any reasonable person couldn't support him. If he was kicked out for causing a disturbance then that's quite reasonable but no need to sue the man for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Still can't believe this is a thing.

Setting aside a facility for a disadvantaged group doesn't equate to reinstituted segregation, meta. You are always wringing your hands.

I agree with him, though. Ultimately, I don't think that more "us and them" thinking and solutions is the way to fix bigotry. It will only deepen the divide. Meanwhile, I recall that psychological research suggests that the best way to end stereotyping is with a steady stream of positive interactions between groups.
Granted, I don't know the exact context around this. Maybe the hope was that, someday, this space would no longer be necessary. And I could understand it as a "stopgap" measure, if the minority students were facing regular discrimination in the computer lab and really did need somewhere safe. But still, I don't really agree with the principle behind segregation.

What makes you think the indigenous students are disadvantaged? If they are, is segregating them going to even the playing field?
It is segregation. Separate but equal facilities assigned by skin color. If that's not segregation then I don't know what is.
How do segregated computer labs help indigenous students? It drives home the message (to both white and indigenous students) that they are different because of their race, and discourages social mixing. Which is the aim of segregation. You can switch "colored people" to "people of color" but the dynamic is exactly the same.
