Likely because they wanted the characters to be better at seeing approaching bear attacks since bear attacks are common in these cartoons. It could also be a reference to the Big Bad Bear character in Little Red Riding Hood whose disguise was foiled when Little Red Riding Hood noticed the bear's large eyes.
