It is awesome because my Kindle is 3G while my phone is not. I have to pay for data on my phone but not on my Kindle, my Kindle has a larger screen, bigger keyboard, and better battery life. I'm still trying to get the hang of typing on it, but I don't know why I didn't think of using my Kindle's experimental web browser for Minichan before. The simple, mobile-friendly interface makes it perfect. It's all black and white and not backlit, but the Kindle's spirit of simplicity and Minichan's spirit of simplicity go oddly well together.

How good are Kindles, anyway? I was going to order one, but then I saw one of Sony's eBook readers on the train and thought that looked pretty nice as well.

If you want a ebook reader, you can buy a Kindle, or you can have a thousand homeless men shit on your face. That's how much better they are than anything else on the market.

The Kindle has it's issues, but in comparison to the current crop of comtetition, it's amazing.
You'd think that the Nook would be better, since it has a flashy color screen and is running android, but it's vastly underpowered and slow. Nooks can be even more laggy and unresponsive than the Kindle, which is a bad combonation with the fact that they are hella pushing thier "full fledged web browser" which can barely handle the web.

Some people complain that the Kindle doesn't have a color screen, doesn't have a backlit screen, doesn't have a touch screen, doesn't have apps, or whatever. Amazon says that the whole point is that books are simple, and therefore the kindle should be simple. It's thin, it's lightweight, and the battery seems to last forever.
The non-backlit black and white screen that they call "electronic paper" does not strain the eyes, or drain the battery, or make it difficult to sleep after reading, etc. If you want a complicated device that does hundreds of different things, go spend $900 on an iPad or a Xoom or whatever. If you want to read books (and post on Minichan) get a Kindle.

I won't deny it. I think my Kindle is probably one of the greatest things I've ever purchased, right up there with my house, that's how much I like it.
I can read anywhere, the battery lasts ages, I have a few DVDs with all the books I want instead of bookshelves and boxes of books and stuff everywhere.
Plus, not saying that you should, but there's also torrents. If so inclined, I could download more books than I could read in a lifetime.
Yes, I am an unrepentant Kindle fanboy.

That battery life is the most impressive part of the kindle to me.
You don't really have to think about charging it at all, and even when it starts to bitch about the battery level it's still good for at least a day or so of moderate 3G/Wifi use.
Pirating books and then reading them on a dedicated reading device is pretty fun, too.
I'll probably end up owning a later generation Kindle at some point. I'm sure they will become ubiquitous soon with the price rapidly dropping and e-ink technology improving like it is.
That's my advice, btw; wait for the next generation Kindle, especially if you are a fan of color.
