I'm generally very liberal on social issues. I think people that wish to transition should receive legal protections and support from government health institutions.
But the more trans women I meet or see in the public eye, the more uncomfortable I am pretending that some aspects of gender can be changed that easily. I'm not referring to anything physical, most trans women do not pass and might retain some masculine features, but that's beside my point.
Being a woman isn't easy. There are a million expectations of appearance and behavior that the average male is clueless about. To classify trans women as women is to ignore the largest part of being a woman. If you transition as an adult you are without the socialization needed to fulfill the gender role you desire. You can learn to walk in a different way, or change the tenor of your voice, but trans women now expect to be identified and treated as a woman before they are able or willing to fill that gender role.

It depends on how they feel. I'd say that's more akin to an intermediate or 3rd gender, but you can ignore most or all of the norms associated with being a woman and still identify as such.
