Really? That seems odd.
I might just start a new character though.

couching is how you sneak. if you sneak everywhere and perk stealth at every earliest opportunity then you're very hard to detect, then if you also perk into damage for rifles then you can 1 shot most things. i would also perk into semiautos and build some heavy hitting .45 or .50 rifles. but the easy to find .308 makes for a great early and midgame sniper rifle. there's also some midgame sniper perks in perception but i didn't really go after them till pretty close to endgame. just put points into agi as much as you need to get the steath perk and then spread points around as you like because stealth is OP and AGI has perks for +damage to semiautos. i think you need a point or two in perception to perk lever action rifles, but it's worth it. i think you do something like 8 agi, 3 per, and then points in luck up to idiot savant and then whatever you like. a rifle and semiauto heavy sneak-and-luck build. pretty strong, but plays slow and sniper like.
a power armor heavy build is also fun from what i hear. power armor and melee, so like, a bunch of strength and intel to start off. enough for the strength and melee perks and suit upgrades. something like that. i never did that kind of play through, i basically rolled a lucky sniper

Stealth can get pretty ridiculously overpowered. I heard one guy say they could one-shot a Mirelurk Queen. :/ Personally I don't see the appeal in crushing everything so easily.
But yes, I can attest that a power armour + melee character is pretty powerful, and very fun. I never stopped finding the Pain Train perk hilarious.

a lot of the difficulty is in being detected. you'll have zero damage mitigation, and you're easily overwhelmed and you lose all damage perks if you're detected as well. so if you're spotted you're dead. so the playstyle is slow, methodical, and you plan routes so as to never be seen. it's only OP if you play it right. actually my brother tried playing my build and had a hard time, he kept wanting to just walk around and, like, barging into places and walking right into everything and died left and right and he found it quite unplayable. he plays totally differently. he runs around with a bat and gets swamped by ten dudes and he just waylays them, and i'm like, how in the fuck. if that happened to my dude i'd be dead. so very dead. but i don't see the appeal of "tanky builds", it feels like you can just throw caution to the wind and just... like barge right in and totally forgo strategy or planning, just shoot from the hip and blast your way through.
i prefer the well timed clean shot that attracts no attention. my brother prefers to lob a few grenades and run in with a bat.

Oh, so you're deliberately making your character easier to kill, by not taking loads of damage resistance perks and such? That's pretty cool.
I did the same thing with my current character. Tough I also gave her 1 endurance, and modded the game so that enemies did more damage and were generally stronger. Only then did I feel like I was really vulnerable to enemy attacks, which probably shouldn't have been the case.
Stealth is a pretty interesting way to play, though, as you say. I enjoy reverse-pickpocketing explosives onto enemies.

yup. glass cannon. if you always take stealth and damage perks over anything then you don't get any real damage mitigation till lategame. i didn't get a "free point" till like 24 and 25 then all my points were spent on more stealth and damage stuff. thenin the 30s i got a couple more free points to spend anywhere. pretty much i just plan to spend a point on a perk as soon as it can be perked, and pick a few perks that compliment each other. so my builds call for saving points sometimes. stealth and damage before anything, i guess, so being squishy just happens as part of minmaxing. but in the lategame points are free because i've fully perked my build. so i could eventually have a really op sniper stealth guy who can also just kill everyone with a bat, but you can only excell through the early and midgame by sacrificing something to be OP elsewhere.

It's funny watching you two discuss a casual game like it has any kind of challenge to it.

Although the they really simplified the roleplay aspects of Fallout, one thing I think Fallout 4 does very well is how versatile the character building is. There's a lot of very different ways you can play your character, and the perks are very good at facilitating this.
For my next run, I want to try an unarmed character with minimal armour and no weapons, relying largely on perks for damage and damage resistance. I was told it wouldn't really work, but dammit I'm going to try!

You shall never know the horror of taking on Libertalia alone, with a low endurance character. If it's not the fucking Fat Man nuking you, it's the near-omniscient raiders spotting you and gunning you down.
I envy your ignorance, in a way.

Hell yeah. That survival mode stuff looks great. It adds some pretty tough challenges without just being the boring "enemies get tougher and do more damage" way. Looking forward to doing my unarmed run on that.
Oh, are you getting the Automaton DLC? I wasn't going to at first, but the trailer for it was pretty good. It seems to have an actual storyline, and the robots you can make are actually really interesting.
Also- what I'm really excited for is the Creation Kit. That's when the great mods will be made, plus one will be able to tweak the game for themself.
