Sauropods were more closely related to reptiles, theropods were more closely related to birds. Dinosaurs is just an umbrella term that covers both subgroups.

Sauropods, which belong, along with therapods (and by extension, birds, which, as any schoolboy can tell you are, indeed, therapods), to the clade saurischia, are, in actual fact, more closely related to birds than you might think. Perhaps the word your're looking for is, in fact, ornithischia. It should be noted that the latest common ancestor of both the saurischians (and, by extension, birds), and the ornithischians is, in fact, a saurischian. Therefore, such ornithichian dinosaurs as the stegosaurs, ceratopsians, and hadrosaurs, are actually more closely related to birds than to reptiles. Thanks.
