Introduce him to a cute 10 year old girl. All boys can benefit from the charms of a older girl.

If you really want to get him a present that has lasting value. I got one of these at 10 and it was one of the best presents ever. Wish I had kept it.

Photo is from my archived so its not representative of the one I got. Mine at the time cost about $35 and that was a lifetime ago.

Learning the very basic parts of the game shouldn't take too long. Learning all the complex stuff that almost never matters takes a long time.
@662,169 (squeegee)
They have free 30 card "decks" (I think called "sample decks" that are very simple and straightforward that they give out to people who say they are new to the game. You can also buy slightly more complex decks called "Intro Decks". Each new batch of cards (a "set") comes with 5 intro decks, one for each color. I would stick to a green, red or white deck, since blue and black tend to be a little more complex. I think they are like $10-15 each. See for example this or This. Those are just two links I pulled off google. I'm sure you can find them cheaper elsewhere online. If you have any questions you can ask me. I've been playing on and off for 16 years so I should be able to help with most things.

yeah, the telescope they've got is very nice, even has all the tracking stuff and you can plug a camera onto it and everything. it can easily resolve onto the moon and you can pick out a lot of close detail, but it's big enough that you can resolve jupiter to about the size of a silver dollar. i think the think has a 12 inch mirror, but idk tbh. never saw jupiter with it, just the moon.

okay, so i got him 3 starter sets. one is white and black, one is red and blue, and the other is green and white, i think. basically he'll have a little of everything and the sets came with 2 booster packs each so he'll have 270 cards to play with all together. i opened the blue and red set and repackaged it and i'm going to call it "my personal set" and use it to play against him to teach him the rules. then i'll give him "my set" because i think he'll think that's neat.

i haven't played in years, so i'm refreshing myself on the rules. any pointers? it came with a very basic little quick start sheet, but it doesn't go into great detail. i think the only question i have is that after summoning i untap the cards on my next turn and then have to retap and repay for the cards each hand in order to attack?

So just the rundown of a basic turn.

Each player starts with a deck that is not less than 60 cards, with no more than 4 of any card except basic lands (plains island swamp mountain forest). Each player starts with 20 life. Each player draws seven cards. Starting with the person who plays first (usually determined by coin flip or dice roll), each player decides if they want to keep their hand. If someone wants to get rid of their hand, they shuffle it back into the deck and draw one fewer card. So 7-6-5-4-3-2-1-0. Once you are happy with your hand, if you sent your hand back, you can look at the top card of your library and choose to keep it where it is or put it on the bottom of the library.

The person who goes first skips their first untap upkeep and draw steps and begins in main phase one. After this turn, no more phases are skipped for the rest of the game. Essentially the person who plays first gets to be 1 land "ahead", and the person who plays second gets to draw first, so they are one card " ahead".

Untap phase: untap any and all permanents you control
Upkeep: sometimes effects will trigger here, it's the last time your opponent can interact with your board before you draw a card.
Draw: draw a card for the turn
Main Phase 1: you may play a land card (only one per turn) from your hand onto the battlefield. Then you may cast any spells that you can afford to using the mana at your disposal (instant, sorcery, enchantment, creature, artifact, planeswalkers).
Combat phase:
Beginning of Combat
Declare Attackers: you may attack with as many or as few creatures as you want. There is no limit to the number of creatures you can have in play
Declare blockers: you may block with one or more creatures. If you block with more than one creature, the attacking player chooses the order in which they are dealt damage.
Combat damage: creatures all deal combat damage to each other simultaneously.
End of combat phase
Main phase 2: same as main phase 1.
End step: the last phase of the turn.
Cleanup step: the game does "housekeeping". Cards that say " until end of turn" stop applying. All damage is removed from all creatures.

That's pretty much the basics. This is very simplified. There are thousands of cards that break rules, and there is the whole "stack" thing going on. The stack is the way the game keeps track of spells and abilities. It works in a last in, first out order. Let's say for the most basic example. You have a 2/2 creature. You attack with it. Your opponent casts a spell that does 2 damage to it. If you let it just resolve, your creature dies. So you cast a spell that gives target creature you control +3/+3 until end of turn. The stack now looks like this

Last in
+3/+3 spell
2 damage spell
First in

So first your spell resolves, since it was the most recent one cast. The creature is now a 5/5. Next the 2 damage spell resolves. It is now a 5/5 with 2 damage on it. If it takes 3 more damage this turn it will die. At the end of your turn it will lose the +3/+3 at the same time the 2 damage is removed, so it remains alive and starts the next turn as a 2/2 with no damage on it.

thanks for this, it came in handy. and he really had fun with it! at first he was a little unsure of the present, but once i pulled out "my deck" and told him i was going to teach him to play he got really excited and started opening packages. i'm really rusty, so your guide was very helpful. i played with a blue and red deck, and he played first with a green/white and then later he played black/white. i trounced him both times. no, he actually did really good. we stayed very close on heath both games. i'm sure we screwed up some rules and might not have done everything perfectly, but we played with consistent rules and tried to stick to them as close as we could. there were a few things i didn't quite understand, and so i tried to make the best sense of it i could. but i think we did okay.

we did well enough that at least i think we got a good idea of how the turns play. and he was picking it up quickly, at one point he even played an instant he'd been holding that killed one of my enchanted creatures. he used it to buff his defense and it was well played.

i'm probably going to go back up to the comic shop and go ahead and buy myself a set. everyone was kinda interested, his older brother and MY brother were watching and kinda learning the rules too. we're all going to dreamhack in april and that'll be the perfect place to know how to play some magic. so now i'm kind of expecting we're all going to learn to play and that we might have to have a Magic: the Gathering game night like we do with Settlers of Katan. especially since you can evidently play with more than 2 people? i thought magic was a 2 player game only, i didn't know you could play, what, like teams or free-for-alls or something? i'll have to check into that.

so, like, what's the best way to learn this game anyway? i read there's some kind of online game? really i need to learn the turns better, how/when to do things, and there were some special cards i didn't understand. i know there's a comic shop downtown that does game nights, and i'm sure people would be willing to sit down and play a hand or two with a noob, but the computer game sounds like a great way to learn.

Cool! I'm glad you had fun. It's a very cool game to start learning, and like you said, once you start learning the different ways you can play your cards, and bluff things to your advantage, you get a sense of all the strategy potentially involved.

With regards to what to buy going forwards, don't get too crazy. MTG can get REALLY expensive, so I'd say learn the cards you have now, and learn the different formats you can play. Formats are basically different groupings of cards that you can play. See this page for the explanations. The ones you are most likely to play starting out i think are:

1. Standard: basically the most recent batches of cards
2. Limited: A tournament style where you pay an entry fee (usually somehwere between $10 and $15 and sit at a table with (usually) 7 other people. All 8 of you are given 3 booster packs, and you open one pack, pick one card, and pass it to the person next to you. This continues until all cards have been selected. You keep all the cards you pick forever, and built a deck out of what you selected. The store provides any basic lands you need, to fill out your deck. This is pretty skill intensive, but the benefits are that it is a low upfront cost (usually no more than $15) and an even playing field. You can't just "buy" a better deck since everyone is given the same thing: 3 randomly selected booster packs.
3. Sealed: You are given 6 booster packs and build your deck out of it. Similar to Limited in that you don't build your own deck beforehand. You have to make do with what you are given.
4. Commander: A popular multiplayer format. It has a lot of special deck construction rules, but the gist of it is you play 100 cards. You may not have more than 1 of any card (except basic lands), and one of your 100 cards is a "Commander", a Legendary Creature that you can cast any time you have the requisite mana. This lets you build around a theme, so let's say for example you play a Commander that gives all Elf creatures you control +1/+1 and a special ability. You would want to fill your deck with elf cards, and cards that care about elf cards etc. to maximize the value your commander provides.

You can of course play any format listed in the link above, but I think those are a good place to start.

If you want my advice on where to start, in about 2 weeks (April 1) there is a "prerelease". Basically, a new set of cards is coming out, and there is a "noob friendly" event called a prerelease. You are playing Sealed (the format where you are given 6 booster packs), but it is designed to be an introduction to the game for new players, as well as an introduction to the new set for enfranchised players. See if you can sign up for that and take your cousin to it. It's quite fun, and is a friendly environment. Sometimes the regular tournaments can get a bit too competitve, since prizes are at stake (usually store credit or booster packs), but prereleases have prizes with almost none of the competitive tension.

Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU double-posted this 10 years ago, 3 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #662,302

Oh, also with respect to multiplayer, yes MTG is technically designed with 2 people in mind, but you can play with any number of people. With 3 people you just go around clockwise. With 4 or more, you can do teams, or still free-for-all, or there are some other variants like planechase that spice up the game a bit, but that's probably more info than you will use right now.
@662,293 (squeegee)
Magic Duels is ok. It is the F2P client for MTG. Think hearthstone, in that you have to grind your way up to a quality deck, but you can probably cobble together something that works when just starting out. There are also other versions. I would skip 2015 as it is kind of just a worse Magic Duels, but Magic Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 and 2014 are both games that have preconstructed decks that are a lot more powerful than anything you can build in Magic Duels. You can also unlock cards for the decks by winning games so there is still a sense of upgrading, but you are improving a prebuilt deck, not building one from scratch.

i'm finding duels to be very informative. i already know what rules i got wrong. i thought you can to pay the mana cost every attack, not just for summoning. i also didn't know about multiple defenders and that damage doesn't bleed onto the player when you kill a creature. i should have played this before, but next time i'll know.

i mean at least the format is the same if not all the cards, right?

We had to pick up some stuff for our nephew last Friday and he's too young for a lot of things, but I would second books, especially anything you read around that age yourself. I know I liked the Tolkien, the Redwall stuff, etc around that age. Although the CCGs might not be a bad idea either. Apparently 3 is too young for a first knife, but depending on maturity, maybe a Swiss Army Knife... although, maybe not, you might not want to be the one to buy that, in case things go horribly wrong either. Hmm. Maybe vidya gaems. Not sure what your budget is, but reading, or educational material that's fun, is probably a good way to go.

We ended buying him some outdoorsy toys, a couple age appropriate books, a little quadcopter thing (but I think that'll end up amusing his parents more), and since he was still too young for a knife, I settled for getting him his first 'real' flashlight.

we still play when i go see them. never ended up making it to any hame nights at book stores, we just play the 4 of us. my cousin started too, we do a LAN night once every couple of months and have been playing some cards too. so far my fav has been blue/black, but i get stomped by real hard hitting decks with lots of instants or overwhelming me with summoned creatures. can only banish so many.
