the mean thing where they discontinue 2 year contracts and make you pay full price for phones in monthly installments for >1 year?? plus activation and restocking fees and interest and taxes?????? I don't think I want to ever get a new phone

How is it mean? If anything it's more honest and transparent to charge for phone service and the phone itself separately.

They still offer two-year contracts at AT&T, but the contracts end up costing you more than if you paid for the phone at full price.

Just a little inside info about choice of carriers. It's still most important IF you want quality coverage.
1: Where you use the phone the most. To work and on the way home. Events in the city and countryside.
I have my favorite carriers but they may not be the best in some other City.
ALL do a poor job in coastal areas because the infrastructure only provides return on investment to 1/2 the area per cell site as compared to any other location in the city/countryside
Advertisements are so full of bullshit re speed and quality and sad to say I contribute to the nonsense. T-Mobile currently has the best weasel words ever.
Its still a buyer beware marketplace. Considering the high cost of the service vs the return in huge $$ to the carrier - Except they end up constantly re-building everything to keep up with competition and yet end up making a god arful fortune and pretending they don't.
