Since, as any schoolboy can tell you, in USAmerican English, "meme" becomes "meem", should not also "Pepe" be pronounced as "Peep"? Shall we reform this linguistic inconsistency?

Derives from the Greek word mimema. Creator wanted a monosyllable word that sounds a bit like gene.So it is pronounced as meem.

It is properly pronounced as mie mie. In informal circles may may is also acceptable.
