Topic: Who here has experience with photoshop?

I'm wondering how long it takes to get a hang of it all?

As if you could handle life in 'Murrica. Stay the fuck in Denmark.

The longer you wait to get started, the harder it gets. I took a class 10 years ago and at the time I was able to apply most of what I learned to Photoshop 3.0 which was severely out of date at that time. Last year I took another class with some Photoshop, and it was like I'd never used the program before. Personally, the program feels very obtuse. Too much learning curve in my opinion.

I'm impressed by your determination to learn it and glad I'm not the only one that feels that way.

Like I'm just starting to grasp how layers work and it took a long time. Learning how to create effects by copying tutorials is one thing, but understanding what you are doing is entirely a different thing.

The GIMP is better.

Use paint.net, photoshop is bloated and shit as fuck. There's nothing you can't do in paint.net 10 times easier that you can do in PS.

I will look into those things once I finally buy a damn pc but meanwhile my teacher is pretty clear about my need to learn photoshop.

Paint.net?
Do you really think you can create a logo for becky, that is equal to photoshop or GIMP, using paint?

Anonymous G joined in and replied with this 10 years ago, 5 minutes later, 28 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #656,134

Lynda.com tutorials are good, udemy and infinite skills are also reasonable. You can find them on most torrent sites

paint.net =/= paint

And yes, as a matter of fact, I've even proven it...

i never learned photoshop, but i did learn maya and lightwave (3d animation junk) and i know gimp kinda okay. once you get the feel for layers it's pretty straight forward. the hidden, not self explanatory stuff is more difficult to get a handle on, but you can knock out any effect with basic tools if you get creative. just takes practice and a few tutorials. you'll get the hang of it, and it's pretty fun to learn.

This mostly.

Teach yourself by being interested and playing. I learned a lot of Photoshop on 4chan back in the day just by being that guy that got a funny shoop out. Now I apparently have job skills. Yay!

No really, the more you do it for fun and enjoy it and play with it, the faster it will happen.

This, I learned it when I was 11 because I wanted to make forum signatures for people on a game I played, now I can boast of decades of experience

Going into the class, I understood the concepts like layers and magic selections because I've been using GIMP for 8 years, but finding the tools and especially navigating through all the various effect menus was really cumbersome for me.

Maybe part of it is my bias for GIMP being a free program, and with a significantly smaller footprint. I don't know, maybe people who use it all day prefer the minimalist interface with nested menus, I just felt like with the huge screens on the Macs we were using, having a toolbox that shows you everything wouldn't have been much of an intrusion.

On the other hand, Illustrator definitely has some nice features that I would've liked to have in Inkscape, but then Illustrator has trouble opening the svg files that it exports which is quite silly. And why is a blank .ai file 1.2MB?

It's sort of like the open source version of Illustrator. I love Inkscape, but I couldn't imagine doing a huge project with it.

Here's what the image looked like when I saved it from .ai to .svg with Illustrator. It looked the same when opening it in the browser.

This is what it looked like when I open that same svg back up with Illustrator.

And here's the code: http://pastebin.com/Tr5K3LcV

It opens fine in my Illustrator (CC 2015). Why not just keep it as .ai?

Huh. Must be a problem in CC 2014 then. I don't have Illustrator at home so I can't open .ai files, plus they're huge for some reason that I can't understand.

Because Adobe wants everything that wasn't bloated before to be bloated now. Even your bicycle.

Yeah it's weird. I think the files are big because it saves all the swatches and graphic styles etc in it unless you manually remove them.
