i was airing up a tire and went to check the oil and found a bunch of foamy oil all over the cap. looks like there's water in the engine and the valves are whipping it into a nasty yellowish foam. it was all over the dipstick too. i checked the water reservoir and it wasn't low, so it's not even a lot of water. i probably have a crack in the head gasket and it's leaking slowly under high pressure. it'll get worse. driving it is likely causing more damage. which might be kinda moot because i'm probably looking at a rebuild. otherwise it's in decent enough shape, has a bunch of little stuff like it needs new shocks and the tires are shot and the headliner is all fucked up and the interior is kinda fucked where my foot ate a hole in the carpet. the headlights need to be rewired because the insulation is all electrical tape at this point and probably there's more than one wiring harness that needs to be completely replaced. not to mention the air intakes have always been pretty fucked and there's always been an engine code displayed because of some repair mod that didn't work out from years and years ago before i even owned it.
it was a really good deal though, and actually one of the most reliable cars i've owned. it's been cheap to maintain and there's been no major problems up till recently. i bought it for a song because it was a one year old refurbished wreck. but it would seem that it's time to say good bye and fine another vehicle to drive into oblivion.

spoke to my mechanic, he said it's actually probably just from condensation. i only drive a few miles to work and he just did the oil, thinks i'm not driving long enough to cook out the condensation. there's no water loss so he said it's probably not a gasket. unless the block is cracked (there's no leak) then it's just in need of a good long drive.
anyway, it's still time to get a new car.

i took it out back today and started doing a little work on it. all cosmetic, cause i'm not a mechanic. i polished the headlights where they'd yellowed a bit and gotten cloudy. took forever. it's buffing compound so you just buff and buff till it shines. finished one, it's like night and day compared to the other one. also took some buffing compound to the hood where heat damage has caused the clear coat to get cloudy and oxidize a bit. using an electric radial buffer for that. still needs some more buffing in a few areas but it's much better - smooth to the touch and not cloudy. but the clear coat is fucked enough in some spots from oxidation that it's just gone. after i'm done buffing it's going to need to be waxed real well and then it should look fine again.
that's pretty much it for the exterior of the car. not going to fuck with tires, just clean the rims and then vacuum carpets and wipe everything down with some armor all or whatever. the worst part will be getting carpet clean, but i'm not really all that concerned about it. i'm doing less than i would do if i was trying to sell it, and i'm certainly not putting any money into it.
went to a dealership today and was looking at certified used cars. i took a work car (so i couldn't get a real appraisal on my trade-in car) so the salesman ended up telling me they auction trade-ins in blocks of cars and that they offer kinda generic trade prices based on what that make/model goes for so i doubt they even care. online a 2008 passat like mine goes for 5, maybe 6 if it's in excellent shape. the "blue book" value in "good" condition is 2000 - 3000 bucks. i seriously doubt i'll be offered more than that. but, he's doing a "blind bid" on my car right now, and if i decide to get a car there i'm going to do my damnedest to hold him to whatever he bids it at sight-unseen. he already made me an offer at 2k off the sticker because i wouldn't tell him how much i wanted to spend, only that i wanted to finance maybe half and pay a pretty good sized down payment - and that i want 5k for my trade-in. lol. i left him my number to let me know about the trade-in, i'm not calling him first. from what i'm seeing it's a pretty decent deal at even the sticker price, but i bet i can get him down to where i'm only going to finance about 7500. the chrysler 200 is a pretty okay car, it's not my top pick but it's on the list for having a nice cabin and a modern body style and it's got a good price for it's size.
i'll be checking out Nissan altimas (i think they are) and Mazda 6's and probably a few others. i want to look at 2014 Maxima's too, they're right there in the same ballpark as the other cars i'm looking at but i've heard they are pretty great cars. that and i want to look at the 2016 maxima, it's fucking nice. the outside is kinda try-harding to look cool and fast, but the cabin looks awesome and it's supposedly a very nice car. should be for a 32k base model car. it's really too bad my car won't make it another 2 years without massive mechanical overhauls, i bet the 2016 maxima will have a ton of depreciation.

If you are buying a car with the intent to drive it for 5+ years I'd strongly recommend a current generation Mazda 6 over a 200. Its one of the most well rounded and attractive sedans at any price point. I'd purchase one without a second thought.

yeah, i'll be going to look at mazda tomorrow. the mazda 6 ranks way up there, it's got great reviews. the 200 doesn't have bad reviews, but people call it underpowered and not as appealing as others in its class. it's nice on the inside, very comfortable and the power felt fine. it's a sedan, some reviews acted like it should be a sports car. anyway, i wasn't super impressed, but the price is really great. from what it looks like it would be a solid enough buy, especially if i can sweeten the deal up a bit. after researching i'm seeing the 2015 200s going for like 15% more than the one i saw today.
but yeah, that guy is going to be competing against mazda and nissans too which are all around nicer cars. but, they're going to be a little pricier and i might not get as sweet a deal since they probably sell a bit better than the 200s (which i had never heard of until yesterday.) but still, be might need to give me the sweetest deal he's ever given to keep me out of a similarly priced mazda.

alright. buying a 2016 mazda 6 it would seem. negotiating now. so far i've gotten them down on the price and getting more for the trade than they offered. sorting out financing atm. got it for 18.9 :)

well, i'm a happy camper. got my car troubles sorted. didn't even make it to look at nissans or hondas. i was sold on the mazda after one test drive. the trade in ended up being pretty funny. i told them i wanted around 5k (a very high-ball price) and they of course offered much less becuase it was throwing a bunch of engine codes and is kinda just fucked. got 2k for it which was about what i expected (figured 1500-2500 tops. they offered 1k and i basically had to say gimmie 2k for it or i'll have to buy the chrysler 200 for less money. they ended up giving me 2 and i was happy enough. they'll be taking it to auction rather than trying to fix it and sell it. anyway, the whole thing went smoothly once we agreed on trade in (i had already gotten them down on the price.)
i think i got a very fair deal, and i love the car. it's great. feels sporty for a sedan, and the fit is excellent. i'd post a pic if it wasn't dark out, but it's white with black trim and has custom black rims and tint. looks like a storm trooper :)

i kinda splurged and bought into their pre-pay service thing they offer which gets me oil changes for 5 years and basically just guarantees i go to them for future service work. When i was working to get a better price i told them i'd do their service stuff and i ended up getting a heck of a deal. they make more money off of service then they do off of selling cars, so i basically traded a guarantee of revenue for them in exchange for them not making much if anything on the car. but i mean i didn't get them to back off of the sticker price much, but i get a better deal than i saw anywhere else. plus it's got some custom stuff i liked that would be expensive to do myself. so all told, with extras, i spent sticker price. buuuut i got extras. i wouldn't have gotten that price if i hadn't promised to (by paying up front) do all my maintenance work through them. so i kinda actually just traded the sticker price markup for their "premium service plan."
i think it was a pretty good deal. oh yeah, and the one i got doesn't have all the bells and whistles, so, like no nav system (which google maps is better than anyway) and it doesn't have the premium sound system, and it doesn't have leather vibrating heated seats and i'm sure it lacks other amenities. it was naturally one of the less expensive ones. it is a sport version though (i don't really know cars, but i think mazdas go kinda like this: basic, sporty, semi-luxury, sport, luxury - i got the "sporty one" but not the S i don't think.) it does have everything i wanted except for power seats, but some stuff i wanted is just nonpremium stuff, like cloth seats. i didn't want leather, i wanted cloth. leather in texas fucking sucks, they get broilingly hot. cloth is better in texas even if it wears and stains easier. so i think i got exactly what i was after and it's got a cool paint job and rims too, bonus. i haven't had a "cool car" since i had a mini cooper (which fuck everyone, they're fun as fuck to drive and i think they look cool even IF mine was a service nightmare and driving a go-kart everyday can get a little old) so i'm actually excited about it which is surprising because i don't get excited about cars ever since i owned a mini cooper - the car i hated to love because it was as equally delightful as it was disappointing.
