On its own, chess is not harmful in the same way as, say, smoking or drinking. However, it can interfere with your life, health, ambitions and relationships. If it is you should start addressing the problem by setting limits on yourself and sticking to them. A certain number of games or certain amount of time played a day. If you regularly fail to obey these set limits then you should really consider stopping altogether. You can better use your time by studying chess seriously instead of playing mindless blitz. Since you actually have to do work when studying, you'll be less inclined to spend an undo amount of time on the game.
