Many people when attempting to define gender to two biological categories of 'male' and 'female' often run into a disagreement as to rather or not they are defined by the 23rd set of chromosomes, i.e. XX and XY, or by the genitalia of the person, i.e. penis and vagina. Which is the most accurate way of categorizing people's sex.

I would say that due to rare circumstances of XY males being born with female genitalia and XX females being born with male genitalia that this is a very poor definition of sex. Chromosomes are more permanent so therefore should be the deciding factor of one's sex. The genitalia argument is for piss poor rednecks who do not understand how biology or science works.

There's a specific chunk of the Y chromosome that is important. If that chunk is out, then the Y doesn't mean there's the appearence of anything male. Or, if somehow that chunk is with XX, you get male. Then there's androgen insensitivity syndrome. Let's just say that nature fucks up in a myriad of ways, like sometimes you get 12 fingers.
