Trump's problem, to the right, is that he just didn't keep things at a fun level. It's okay to hate Muslims, but you just don't go out and ban them. Fine to hate women and support pro-rape, anti-choice policies, but you don't go and use the word "pussy" in public. The right is mad that Trump exposes them for what they are.

Actually its sorta brilliant. Call them rapists and convince everyone Mexico will pay for the wall that will keep them in Mexico and out of USA.
Problem with this plan of course is that after Romney failed and the RNC did the autopsy and said we have to find a way to bring Latinos into our party, Trump blows up any chance nation wide for Latino support.

I recently watched a short YouTube clip with Trump on some U.S chat show. The Muslim ban thing came up. Trump said it would only be temporary, and only until they "figure out what's going on" (with radical Muslims).
This claim really confused me. What great mystery is he hoping to solve? Islamic terrorists are very vocal about their motivations. There are intelligence agencies that have a pretty clear idea of what these terrorists are about and how they recruit.
It seemed like an attempt to not come across as bigoted or xenophobic with the ban, but it just felt so weak and transparent.
He also did not sound like I expected.

It's particularly weird because Trump has basically taken a piss on the Republican orthodoxy (dissed the Iraq war, supported planned parenthood, tepid on Israel) but is so far the Republican frontrunner. The Republican establishment is like the court at Versailles. "Why do the peasants want bread? Why cant they just have some cake?"
Conservative voters are being scolded for supporting a candidate they consider conservative because it would be bad for conservatism? And by the way, the people doing the scolding? They’re the ones who’ve been advocating for open borders, and nation-building in countries whose populations hate us, and trade deals that eliminated jobs while enriching their donors, all while implicitly mocking the base for its worries about abortion and gay marriage and the pace of demographic change. Now they’re telling their voters to shut up and obey, and if they don’t, they’re liberal.
It turns out the GOP wasn’t simply out of touch with its voters; the party had no idea who its voters were or what they believed. For decades, party leaders and intellectuals imagined that most Republicans were broadly libertarian on economics and basically neoconservative on foreign policy. That may sound absurd now, after Trump has attacked nearly the entire Republican catechism (he savaged the Iraq War and hedge fund managers in the same debate) and been greatly rewarded for it, but that was the assumption the GOP brain trust operated under. They had no way of knowing otherwise. The only Republicans they talked to read the Wall Street Journal too.
On immigration policy, party elders were caught completely by surprise. Even canny operators like Ted Cruz didn’t appreciate the depth of voter anger on the subject. And why would they? If you live in an affluent ZIP code, it’s hard to see a downside to mass low-wage immigration. Your kids don’t go to public school. You don’t take the bus or use the emergency room for health care. No immigrant is competing for your job. (The day Hondurans start getting hired as green energy lobbyists is the day my neighbors become nativists.) Plus, you get cheap servants, and get to feel welcoming and virtuous while paying them less per hour than your kids make at a summer job on Nantucket. It’s all good.
Apart from his line about Mexican rapists early in the campaign, Trump hasn’t said anything especially shocking about immigration. Control the border, deport lawbreakers, try not to admit violent criminals — these are the ravings of a Nazi? This is the “ghost of George Wallace” that a Politico piece described last August? A lot of Republican leaders think so. No wonder their voters are rebelling.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that (Trump is no libertarian) but it is absolutely hilarious to watch the panic on both sides of the mainstream political establishment. It's like kids who have spent the last 20 years playing with matches suddenly shocked, shocked that their house has caught fire and they can't quite put it out with the garden hose (the garden hose being Marco Rubio, the safe middle-of-the-road Republican establishment marionette). The Democrats are in the other side of the house laughing at the silly Republicans who have caught the house on fire but they don't realize there's nothing to stop the flames from engulfing them, too.
I don't think anyone's voting for Trump because of his political nuance or expertise, they're doing it as a "fuck you" to the political establishment in general. Rome is burning, might as well lob a few Molotov cocktails in and vote for Nero for the lulz.

That is the best part! He has "liberal" positions on trade and foreign policy and domestic policy but he's winning all the "conservative" voters! It turns out immigration is a better selling point than jesus and fetuses.
