Topic: I need some help on deciding what a suitable laptop for myself might be.

Okay. So, I'm somewhat uneducated when it comes to computers and knowing what is and isn't decent, so I'm asking for some assistance here. I'm pretty sure that I want a laptop that has the following specifications: (I'd like to be able to play games on this laptop, so if the following specs aren't suitable for doing that, please let me know.)CPU: 2 GHz or more
RAM: 2 GB or more
HDD: 100 GB or more
Now, I really don't know the difference between core i3, core i5, core i7, duo-core processors, etcetera, so if someone could enlighten me there, that would be nice. I'm not necessarily asking you to choose a computer for me, I just would like some input/information on what will work best. I apologize for any derp that may have been contained within this post. Thank you in advance.

500GB HHD is standard these days, and so is 4GB ram. I wouldn't settle for less. The i7 core is better than i5, and i5 is better than i3. The better the more expensive. duo-core is basically two cores, which is also mostly standard nowadays.

You could easily get a 2+GHz AMD dual-core processor with 4GB of ram and a 320-640GB hard drive for around $400-$500 and it would probably do everything you want it to do. If you want to spend close to $1500, you're talking Top-of-the-line i5 or i7 CPU, 6-8GB of RAM, 640GB-1TB HDD or even 128GB-256GB SSD, along with dedicated graphics card, high resolution LCD screen, etc. So the question is, do you want to spend less money on just want you need, or do you really want to spend $1500 on a top-of-the-line laptop?

It is decent amount, especially if sales tax could be circumvented. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no sales tax. Even if that's not possible its still gonna be a nice rig. I'll hunt around after a bit for some good deals.

Another question I'd like to ask, if you don't mind, is are you sure you need a laptop and not a desktop? Are you sure you need the portability? I know a lot of people who buy laptops and then the laptop rarely leaves their desk.

Its a decent investment and although mid-tier would suit her needs for now, top-tier would last longer, especially concerning gaming. x64 would have issues with peripherals, but its worth it, and I think the market is catching on at a decent pace.

About the specs, only the CPU is better. It lacks a dedi video card (the GMA0 is shit), she wants to play games. It doesn't have a 7200rpm HDD, no backlit keyboard, no business quality build and ease of maintenance, no proper warranty. Ugly glossy low quality screen. And the resolution is way too high for a 15", try reading text on it at 1920x1080. Nice try.

It's not all about how many GeeBees it has, if the laptop is going to explode or snap off the hinges three months down the line. Remember, a consumer level warranty doesn't cover such things, only manufactuering defects. The warranty that comes with a business model laptop *does* cover accidental/wear&tear damage!

All laptop manufactures lock owners into brand specific situations, but Dell is the worst about it in my experience. To be clear I own a Dell currently and I've owned other brands in the past. Any changes/upgrades etc will be determined by Dell, not you. The options are limited. As far as drivers go, rather than getting a driver from say Intel (just for example), you'll have to wait for Dell to release a driver specifically made for your system, and they are in no rush to do it. In fact it may never happen.
As you can see for the average user its no problem, but for nerds, we want FREEEEEEDDDDOOOOOOOM. =D
