If it's unexpected we call the police and they come and look at the body for a moment, shake their head and leave. If we know that it will happen, they call the family or power if attorney if there is one, and a religious leader if one is specified, and a funeral home if one has been picked out.
If there is no family or they can't get ahold of them and there hadn't been a funeral home specified, they scramble around while the body stays in the room for hours. We encourage the room mate if there is one, to stay out.
After all calls are made, someone like me goes in to take care of the room and body. I empty the trash and throw away random toiletries, wash down the body, change their diaper, change their sheets and clothing, and the arrange the body like the person is sleeping. I tuck them in, fold their hands near their chest, put a rosary or Bible in/ near their hands if their religious, put their glasses if they have them on the night stand, raise the head of the bed so they aren't lying down completely flat, and close their eyes.
After the relatives come and go, the funeral home comes with a crushes velvet padded stretcher, loads up the body and covers in with a sheet, then leaves out through the emergency ambulance doors.
Then housekeeping sanitizes the room.
