They were both locked in safe mode, unable to reconnect to the session and unable to reboot normally. The stupid bitch was changing all sorts of shit and broke the start menu, search, and trash functions on both of them before she locked me out.
Running msconfig has helped the boot probs.
Most of the time was spent with a guy that was trying to get my older laptop sorted anyway. It hadn't been updating. He was a helpful dude, but just ended up running the win 10 installer as the goto fixit.

yeah, reinstalling an os on laptops is a bitch. you need drivers for a bunch of obscure hardware. can be hard to do correctly if you don't have the original backups it came with. tbh if you're having to "change things" and mess with the registry then you so far fucked you need to just start over. there is little reason to bother with heroics, and you're finding that it's easy to just make everything worse. unfortunately a clean instal might be your only option, but you might end up with permanently borked wifi or bluetooth or something because drivers. sucks, but, that's laptops for you.

Major vendors should have software and drivers on their support website. I have an old POS computer, and I can still Google the model name and number followed by the word "drivers" and the first hit takes me to the vendor's site with all the drivers for the computer's hardware.
