I saw they were hiring and figured why the hell not. I probably won't get the job, but I'll just be happy to work since I think I have to always remain busy or else I'll go insane.

work experience doesn't matter if it's a job you fill out an application for. the exception being service, like wait staff, but even then they hire hosts with no experience.
getting entry level work in sales is the same process it's always been, just go out and fill out applications. that kind of staff has very high turn over so jobs always come and go, most places don't even need to put up a sign. just go in and ask for an application then go fill it out and turn it in immediately. just keep doing that at all the places around you. never go in and ask "are you hiring," just ask for the application. i've been told there's some kind of law that if you offer applications, and are asked for one, then you have to give it out. so just get it, fill it out, turn it in.
and remember, this is just some schmo who's going to be reading it. write in print, write very clearly, be sure to include relevant life experience. most applications will have an area where you can detail why you're a good fit. and if not, then type up a second page with a brief paragraph explaining what life experience you do have. for gamestop, specifically, you tell them you already know the games and game systems they sell. it'd be good to just very briefly let them know that you're at least qualified to talk about the products they sell. that right there is as GOOD as work experience. you're immediately better than the just laid off 50 year old.
there's no reason why you aren't qualified, they'll put you through training like everyone else. i mean, you graduated high school, right? at least a GED? that's all the "work experience" they need to show them your a person who can put effort into things and achieve a goal with personal effort. you're good to go. now, be confident cathy, and get out there and fill out those applications. 2016 is your year, catherine, get out there and make some money.
edit: oh, and what D said, volunteer work is awesome for filling in that gap in work. people love to see that while you couldn't work you worked for free. that's how good i am at working, is what volunteer work says. so yes, go do some volunteer work at church or through the community so on applications you can say you spend your time productively. it's a win-win. even if it's a few hours a week, it says a lot about character.
