We have a bit of a dry heat wave here. It's playing hell with my eyes, but I'll survive. Glassing a motorcycle body tomorrow, and everything is going to smell and taste like epoxy by the end of the day. This is a fun song that doesn't really describe my life, but it's what I'm listening to now. And now. And now. (I actually own a physical copy of this album!) I think I'll go back to listening to the Anglo-Saxon chronicle in Old English when I'm sober. It makes more sense.

Most of the work in the field I specialized in (vision science) is funded by DOD grants. Designing depth perception algorithms for self-guided missiles isn't really my gig. (It's only now that self-driving cars are becoming a thing, and actually someone from the lab I used to work at is consulting with Honda now.) Now I mostly make pressure-forming molds, fiberglass things, do 3D scanning, and do concept art in Photoshop.
What you go to school for isn't always what you end up doing. :/

Actually a few years ago (now many) I hired a consultant to come up with depth perception algorithm's for a robotic project. Took a crew of them to finish that task.
Broke a pane of glass on purpose - Captured with high speed cam - Robots mission was to pick up the fragments and resemble as a demo only to Japanese - Drove me bat shit crazy to my end limits as an engineer - My only professional fail other then company that hired me as a consultant was more then pleased.
Got Robots out of my system on that assignment.

What are you using for 3D scanning? I've just bought a camera and started playing with photogrammetry using ContextCapature. I've also borrowed my friends drone a couple of times for this, but so far with limited results.

Cool, it's where I'd like to be. Did you know a half decent camera can get you really good results? I took some photos of stuff and posted screen shots. My 3D printer died on me before I could get decent repeatable results. It was the cheapest one I could find that could do ABS, and I think my next one will be an upgrade.
I want to be able to take photos, 3D model and scale it, 3d print it, make a mold and pour a casting eventually.

No. Pressure forming is creating a mold with the space in-bewteen already there and then just pressing something down (usually after it has been heated and in a shop press) to fit that limited space. It sort of melts to fit.
Injection molding is creating that space and injecting some material into that space that fills the gap and attains the shape you want.
We don't do any hollow parts, so we don't do blow molding. But vacuum forming is not out of the question. We haven't done it recently, but it's certainly a possibility.

I've hydro formed large steel domes for tanker trucks, using a pressure washer. It's fun stuff, I love forming things and I've had access to various 100+ ton presses, always forming sheet metal though.
Ideally I want to blow a stainless steel sphere from a cylinder one day. An extremely high pressure small one.

No, we are using pre-made foam blanks that are heated to be inserted into a pressure form mold in a 20-ton shop press. We are not spraying the foam. We are doing parts that might become molded foam backpacks in the future. It's all in a prototyping period right now.

Oh yeah, a 300 ton broach press with a 6" ram and a long stroke that pressed the hell out of everything was awesome to play around with. It was a huge bit of equipment with a slow but unstoppable force.

The company we're designing for makes the foam. We just cut it to fit as needed. I'm sure if this were further along than the prototyping stage, then there would be some process for making blanks. Right now the process is me and a razor blade.
