Topic: Drawball.com and what we can learn from it; could this site benefit from being split into two parts?

Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 started this discussion 15 years ago #4,966

If you go to http://www.drawball.com/, you'll find that there are two drawballs: drawball 1 and drawball 2. Drawball 1 is the main drawball. You can look at it, but you can only draw on it if you submit original artwork proving that you have artistic ability and that you seriously want to draw on it, and not just vandalize it and scribble random shit. Drawball 1 is serious business. Drawball 2 is for the masses and it's not serious business. Anyone can draw on it, you can draw whatever you want, you can vandalize, you can erase, you can have your own work vandalized and erased, etc. Drawball 2 serves several purposes. It gives everyone who's not interested in drawball 1 something to play on, it attracts people to the site to begin with, and it also acts as a distraction for the vandals and trolls. Without drawball 2, a lot of people would probably spend a lot of time submitting serious artwork in an attempt to get approved just so they can fuck around with the drawball. Any damages done could probably be easily undone, and whoever did it would be permanently banned, but get enough people doing it and the admins start to fucking go insane and serious users are driven away in all the frustration. Sound familiar? Drawball 1 would basically be like AnonTalk if not for drawball 2. Since drawball 2 is there, most people just play around on there for the instant gratification, rather than going to through all the trouble to make their way into drawball 1. This allows the serious artists to get to work on drawball 1, and still gives people freedom to do whatever they want on drawball 2. Note that even though drawball 2 was originally made as a distraction for the trolls and "shit-drawers," there is still some decent work on drawball 2. It's not as high quality, but it's still interesting and fun nonetheless.

4chan and other chans do the same thing but on a much larger scale. They divide different parts of the board up by category, so you can go to different boards to talk about different subject matter. This site doesn't get nearly enough traffic to divide it up by subject, and it wouldn't be worthwhile enforcing either, but consider the 4chan boards /b/ and /r9k/ (before moot got rid of it). /b/ was the random board where pretty much anything goes. Rules that apply to the rest of the board don't always apply to /b/, and as a result you got a lot of complete shit, but the freedom on /b/ gave you some interesting content also. /r9k/ was similar to /b/ in the sense that you could post about just about anything, but /r9k/ was the more serious version of /b/. Only original content was allowed so that /r9k/ was never flooded with the same bullshit macro images, memes, shitposts, get in here threads, etc. Some people hated /r9k/ because they didn't like the serious business, and some people liked the freedom and quality of /r9k/ and couldn't stand /b/ because of the complete flood of shit. Both boards had good qualities. /b/ is kind of like drawball 2 in the sense that rules are intentionally relaxed there so that all the idiots, spammers, trolls, etc. flood to /b/, and as a result, other boards can function normally without having mods constantly banning, deleting, reading appeals, pissing off users, etc. It also makes it easier to bring down the banhammer on anyone who does post shit on other boards, because they don't have an excuse: they can take it to /b/, just leave the other boards alone. /b/ is the asshole of the internet.

So, even though we're a very small chan, we could consider applying this same concept. Divide the board into 2 parts, and have one part be like our "drawball 1" or "/r9k/" and have the other board be like our "drawball 2" or "/b/". This way it's pretty much win/win for everyone. Less people will complain about getting banned or having threads locked, or having content edited or whatever because they can just go to the more relaxed board and post whatever the fuck they want. Threads that don't belong on the more serious board could simply get shifted to the less serious board rather than being locked or deleted, and only the worst of the worst threads and posts would get locked/deleted on the less serious board. There would hardly be any more complaints about quality, or shitposting, or trolling, because if you want to keep it more high quality or serious you'd just post on the more serious board and abide by the rules. We could make everyone happy and attract way more people to the site this way. Posters like Ks would come back because they'd be more happy with the quality on the serious board and the serious board would be full of nothing but interesting threads, while posters who stayed away because they didn't like being censored (not that we censor that much) could have a field day on the less serious board. You could switch freely between the two depending on your mood. DM could be (somewhat) free to post his shtick on the less serious board, and anyone sick of it could just post on the serious board where it strictly wouldn't be allowed. I really don't see what could go wrong here. Obviously it might take a lot of coding and other bullshit that ultimately might not make it worth it, and that's understandable, but aside from that, this really sounds ideal.

In short, should we divide the board into two categories? What do you think would happen if we did?
Poll option Votes Percentage Graph
Divide the board into two categories 7 47%
Leave the board as it is 8 53%

A serious board might be fun to experiment with if it got some use. Our PRQ bunker here was a serious board for a while when it was atbbs.org. It mostly sat unused though.

That's a little different since it's a completely different web address. If both boards were still minichan, just 2 different parts of minichan, it would get more attention. Plus, the quality would be more important than the quantity on the other board. I think if the idea were given a chance, it would gradually build up steam.

I mentioned something similar before involving a flag that would identify a post as belonging to a particular topic or category. "Virtual boards" could be created by only displaying posts with certain flags in bumps or topics according to a particular user's preferences, or the whole sort of general mishmash could be viewed at once by those so inclined. A post would be flagged as belonging to a specific topic or board and moderated accordingly.

Just throwing ideas out there now.

I don't want DM back and I certainly don't want Ks back, two whiny dramafags. DM can fucking stay where he is, he has serious mental problems, I'm not even fucking joking. Ks thinks that his way is always the best way and that there is no other way to do it, he's a selfish prick. If he really wanted to post here he would ignore all the bullshit and just post in serious topics.

There is one fundamental flaw in your perfectly epic plan: Who judges what is a serious topic and what is a shit topic? If the mods decide we will have users (Like DM) who will complain that their topics are not been taken seriously and should be put in the serious section of the site. Then the serious section will be diluted by shit tier topics. Another scenario is the trolls just become smarter (which is perfectly plausible) and just shit all over the serious section. If we have learned anything from our spats of the past is that people like to be noticed. No one is going to post in the shit section if they aren't been given 100% attention. We have been through this again and again and people still fail to learn: We all like a bit of drama now and again, but too much drama fucks everything up, and your plan is the mother of all shitstorms.

I would post in both, I really enjoy the serious topics, and I enjoy the random bullshit that's going to appear anywhere. What I don't like, is mods deleting threads that are no more shitty than others. If you don't like it, ignore it or lock it. Its when you post in a shit thread angrily that you feed the trolls. Or when you delete a thread with no reason, you get people gaming like me. I mean just lock it and give a reason. Fuck Deleting Threads. Unless its CP or something illegal.

I like this idea a lot. It sounds like it would involve less coding, a simple flag system could be used, and the user can filter by flags or not at all. We would be creating virtual boards. If someone posts a shit topic under a serious flag, the mods could just remove the flag.

@88,094 (F)
Well of course there is going to be some debate between what goes where, but it's better than the system we have now. As already mentioned in my original post, trolls wouldn't be able to shit all over the serious board, because mods would simply move their shit topics to the shit board, eliminated the need for locking threads, and repeat offenders would be banned. In the flag system mentioned above, mods could simply remove or add the appropriate flag. The only problem I could see would be trolls posting shit all throughout the serious topics, but those can be deleted and offenders can be banned, and most trolls would just not waste their time and post shit in the less serious threads anyway. That's the whole point.

@88,095 (Deckard Cain !xhERPesk0k)
It could only gain traffic from this idea, and with the flag system mentioned above, it wouldn't seem any slower. You wouldn't have to sort by flags if you didn't want to.

@88,096 (I)
I would agree with you if Anontalk wasn't a pedo board run by a complete psychopath, and the fact that it's down. Also, it makes more sense to have all traffic under one site, but have the topics sorted in some way.

@88,100 ([^_^])
This.

@88,080 (F)
No. There's nothing serious enough about MC to make it more like Drawball 1. Also, like I said above, it makes more sense to have all traffic under one site, but have the ability to flag/sort topics by personal taste.

@previous (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)

I do miss it (but I'm not too fussed if it had to go either), but it was an entirely different site, with a different culture. I don't think that anything we could do here on-site would be as easy or as good as having another site, in my opinion.

Not sure about the flag thing. It's subjective and ridged. Topics change and evolve.

@previous (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)
I've thought about the whole having another site thing for a long time, and the issue with that is the splitting of traffic and getting new traffic to the new site. Also, on the subject of it being too subjective and rigid, having topics sorted under one site helps with that, because instead of having 2 sites with very strict rules, it's very easy to change the flags on topics or move topics from one section to another or whatever. We don't have to be very strict with the flags. At at least gives us something.

I respect you as a poster Broseph, but this is one of the worst ideas ever. I thought you of all people could see the flaws in this system. As much as you like to think this would generate more traffic, it wouldn't, if anything it would drive more people away from the site. The system we have now many not be perfect but it's better than the one you are talking about. The drama that would unfold from the changes that you are implying would be astronomical, I don't think the mods would want to bring that upon themselves.

Do you really think a simple tag/flag system could create that much drama? I don't think so. I don't see how it could do anything but improve quality. Every other chan has their site categorized in some way. Why shouldn't we give it a try? If it stirs up a shitstorm, we could just remove all the tags/flags.

I love the idea of making virtual boards. Admins would have to limit the pages to perhaps 10 and have a bump limit though because it sounds really resource-intensive to filter thousands upon thousands of topics.

I'm not following what you mean by a bump limit would be needed. Threads are already set to lock if they're so old, and the flag/tag system we're talking about is just one byte of info added to each thread, and would allow the user to sort by that info or not. Basically, just add a check box that says "Serious business" to the new thread creation page.

I think that topics should be categorised with different topics (drugs, porn, vidya etc) and you can filter to show only topics with that category, thus creating psuedo-boards.

Besides, nobody wants a serious discussion board. Look what happened to Anontalk.

Anontalk failed because of a psychotic owner and too many pedophiles. It didn't fail because it was a serious board. Your idea of having several different pseudo-boards might be a good idea, but as small as we are, and as new as the idea is, I think we should start by breaking it up into "serious" and "chan" topics. If that's successful, I can see us moving on to other tags/flags or whatever we want to call it. That's what 4chan did. It started off as just /b/ and slowly started experimenting with other boards.

I don't see why. People can view MC like it is now if they want, or they can filter topics from a drop-down box. Maybe it could be done so that the database quiries several topics, so people who only want to lurk on certain boards can do it without any effort.

No no no! People are gonna be pissed if mods start moving their topics from the good section to the shit section, and this WILL happen because it is all based on ones perspective of a topic.

I personally think the tag idea is a good idea. The best way to implement it would be to allow the users to tag their own topics when they create them, the same way as in polls are created.

So if I was to make a topic, for example, on the 3DS. In the tag box I would put the following tags #Nintendo #3DS #Gaming.

There are problems with this system; would the rate at which old topics are locked be reduced because the possible increase of activity on older topics. If the system was implemented, would it really be used? I couldn't see myself using it, I have no interest in restricting myself to reading certain topic(s). I suggest if you want your topics sorted by tags that you fuck off back to 4Chan, they have plenty of boards categorized to suit any need or desire.

The big difference with us and 4Chan is that people here are some what interested in everything that is posted here. Even if it's a shit topic we all know that you'll probably read it anyway to see where it leads.

OK, when I talk about the tag/flag idea, I don't mean have dozens of subjects to choose from or be able to add whatever tags you like. I'm talking about starting off with only 2 tags: "serious business" or "anything goes." It would be as simple as a "serious" check box in every new topic that you have the option of checking, just like you have the option of starting a poll. So, if you want to have serious discussion, you click an option that only shows threads that are user-marked as serious. If you're in a silly shitposting mood, you click an option to hide all the serious topics, and if you don't like this feature, you don't filter at all. If the feature is abused, the mods don't move your topic from one board to another, they simply remove the "serious" flag from your post, so it only appears as if the shitpost has been removed to people who are filtering the board for serious topics only. People who shitpost in serious topics would have their posts deleted, but they can't complain, because if they want to shitpost, they can just filter out the serious topics and chat with people who are currently feeling more laid back.

You're. Not. Listening.

Situation:
1. I want to create a topic trolling religion.
2. Tick "serious" discussion box.
3. Serious trolling thread created.
4. Mods remove serious tag.
5. Me: OMFG MODS WHY DID YOU REMOVE MY SERIOUS TAG?!?!?!?!?!? *CRIES*
6. Mods tell me to go fuck myself or they reinstate the serious tag on my thread.

Repeat this 100 times (because it WILL happen) for both regular and anon users. Enjoy your shitstorm. There is a very fine line between not trolling and trolling well, something which has been fought time and time again here. I'm not even sure some users (let alone some mods) really know the difference between a good thread and a troll thread. Good mods can spot a troll thread, great mods can remove a troll thread and make sure it's not even missed. You think you're the only one here Broseph, you're not. The trolls far outnumber the regular posters, if enough people complain about the new system they will change it back. It has always been this way.
