Yeah, they implied Pocahontas was roughly close in age to John Smith. Maybe instead of whitewashing, you could just, oh, I don't know, pick a story that doesn't involve a teenage girl hooking up with an adult male? Don't pretend like you're making an "educational" film and then show love interest when you have to lie to make it appropriate for kids.
