Even Firefox 4.0 has put the skids on willy nilly apps, FF had gone Gonzo re how apps end up killing battery life and make a browser much slower then should be. Nor can you blame SP's for Cells to hold out on Skype, being a direct competitor and all.

Cell phone service providers are horrible anti-competitive bastards, and I do blame them for being horrible anti-competitive bastards by doing things like that.
Hardware manufacturer/Software distributor and Service provider colluding to prevent certain 'undesirable' applications from reaching the market sure sounds like an illegal cartel to me.

I cannot and do not speak for Apple, have a couple for work reasons and get the beta or advanced release to evaluate. I can/do see both sides of the equation. Apps can fuck up a phone - apps can lose revenue for the SP. Someone will say brand x sucks and it turns out to be one or more apps installed that make it that way. Apple walks a fine line re approved and not allowing non-approved apps. Still major legal dis and dat going on because.
So the ones I listed are approved. I do use one that Apple tried to block.

Again I see both sides of that equation. Now for a couple of major facts and in this case if r04r lurks she will see its a global view in part.
One might think the SP's are ripping people off. AT&T as a name with history of that name (in name only) has paid stockholders a dividend without fail even in the great depression. If you look at the 10K report you might wonder how they can continue to do this - They fucked themselves over and now have to do more upgrades then anyone else. They just paid Qualcomm a few extra Billions of $$$$ for BW and will try and take T-Mobile over for more BW and more cell sites. They also have to do a 100% new backhaul via microwaves or hard to get to fiber - the current T1 lines are crap for current loading.
Verizon my most fav SP. They are 40 - 45% owned by Vodaphone and Vodaphone wants to take it over - formal announcement EXCEPT Board of Directors just happened to notice that Verizon no longer pays dividends on stocks. They cannot because they are putting out $$$$$$$$$ for the 4G LTE total upgrade.
So the monsters and they are Monsters are carrying a huge monkey on backs. This is made no better when you see ads begging you to buy into a plan and then you jam up system by actually trying to use what you were sold. Marketing is thrilled, Engineering is angry mad as hell at Marketing for selling that which will never do as they promise - its just that Verizon does it better. AT&T lies lies lies but does pay me in 10 days on billing.
