I remember when a lot of people laughed at the first iPad. Jokingly referring to it as an oversized iPhone. Now considering how many phones are getting larger screens. One has to wonder if they truly are a tablet killer.

That is the point. Smartphones are fantastic for on-the-go usage because they're so small but they suck for serious web browsing and reading books. You have to either zoom text so can only read a paragraph at a time or squint at micro print.
It's like asking "what's the point of letter size paper? you can just write things on post-it notes!" Or what's the point of TVs? you can just watch TV on your iPod nano!"

That was, IIRC, due to the OS and not the tablet form factor as such. Microsoft was working on tablets since 2002 and the thinking pre-iPad was that tablets would be shrunk-down PC laptops with all the peripherals, USB ports, x86 processor, Windows, etc. The idea of expanding the smartphone seemed silly at the time because smartphones weren't "real computers" and couldn't do "real work" but it was ultimately the right way although Microsoft is still banging their head against the wall with Surface.

They already have tv screens that can be rolled up and folded. Maybe something in the same vein as that.

Tablets have more capability. I've essentially a tablet/laptop that's functioned well (until now...) for use with office, chemistry programs, Photoshop...
I wouldn't wanna be using excel or drawing reaction mechanisms or analyzing large data displays (NMR) on a smartphone.
