Does anybody have anything sensible to say about this? As a non-USAmerican I am genuinely interested to know how big a thing this is over there, and whether people feel it is important, for example.

The civil rights movement was a big deal here. There are places in the US where no one really gives a fuck what race you are. There are also places where race is a real dividing issue. So it's a big thing in that it's not a big thing in some places only miles away from places that it is a big thing. So some of us think that some other people are backwards and bigots for judging people for looking different, or some think that others of their race are mixing with some kind of sinister, foreign element. It's a little complicated and weird.
