Someday, eventually; and you if you think memory is enough to keep you around forever.

Remember, everyone is forgotten when given enough time.

there were necropolises outside most mediterranean cities
people would go to have picnics with their dead relatives
there were monuments of the dead, essentially asking the living to remember them
because in ancient mediterranean religions there was no real hope of an afterlife, so memory is all they could ask for

That sounds a lot nicer than the current standard idea of life after death.

Are you referring to the Christian envisioning of the afterlife? That was (according to the guy who wrote the decline and fall of the Roman empire) one of the reasons it was so successful. Although it was different then actually, more Jewish and focussed on the corporeal - ie Jesus was resurrected and ascended, body and all, that this can happen to you, and that you can directly influence your afterlife.

99% of all doctors agree that we will die at some point in our lives.

not in particular. as I understand it, most large-scale religions in the world believe in some form of afterlife.

AFAIK you're right. That seems to be a relatively modern invention though.

That book was so flawed it is being questioned in its totality

Yeah I don't doubt it. Haven't actually read it though, just listened to an enthusiast talk about his attitude towards Christianity and the authors perceived role of it in the decline and fall of the empire, and emphasised his hilariously strong biases.

It's being questioned that there actually was a decline and fall of the empire! So that guy can lol to the cow bank

I mean. The empire did eventually disintegrate. He kind of suffered from the old-as-time nostalgia that those were the good old days and everything has gone downhill since then. It was more of a Change of the Roman Empire as far as I gather.

A similar thing happened with the Depressionman Empire, I think.
