I bought it used... so someone was offloading it anyway. The major problem with this 3D printer is the one single 3D printed part on it that is all warped and misaligned and a fuck up.

Still, it was a grate learning curve for trying to get a shitty thing to function and I've learned a lot about 3D printers out of necessity along the way. It was a good little machine that only had a couple of things wrong with it. One of those things was an inexperienced operator but I was doing better recently and getting good results with ABS until the screen died. Now idk if it's even worth saving.

I feel like it's time to invest a few thousand dollars in a proper one now, because I have a better understanding of them in general. I probably launched that thing 100 times and I have maybe 10 interesting prints. Not successful ones, ones that didn't work but I learned shit from them and kept a couple. I like that I spent the time learning it anyway, because if I can eventually just hit "go" on an app and soon have a useful thing in my hands, then it's something I'd like to be an early adopter and frequent user of.

I honestly see a manufacturing revolution coming, that will eclipse what sharing data files has done to music and movies and software. It's doing it to hardware. It's 3D printing all the parts you need, they just need to be assembled in home! IKEA inspired stuff manufactured that is worldwide trending downloads, between you and your friends, shared ideas and hashtags etc.
I think it will be the same size as all the other appliances, like the size of an oven, dishwasher, washing machine or drier. If the hippies get a hold of it, it'll run on trash mixed with recycling so that would be cool too. Larger slightly commercial community versions will be spitting out lounge sized items and larger overhead gantry sized printers will spit out the storage places for all the things! Lots of them and enough for whoever wants a copy. It'll change society and most likely current manufacturing models and supply chains, but that will result in all those unemployed people printing out pretty much all of the useful shit they want anyway, I guess.

cool. i always get interested in them and want to buy one and then i think about what i would actually use it for beyond making little bobbles and demo parts. i've almost got myself convinced that i'd be able to use a 3d printer at work if we had a 3d copier (which exist.) probably i'd end up trying to print some models or maybe make some cosplay "thing," but, i don't really do cosplay... and i don't think i'm going to actually finish out and paint a model of anything. it'd be kinda cool to pull some video game assets out of cryengine and print something, but i've seen instructionals, it's assloads of work to take a 3d print to a smooth, detailed and finished appearance. and they're really not all that useful for prototyping (at least in abs) when more advanced laser sintering makes more detailed parts out of metal that can pretty immediately be put into use. there's not much a plastic print can tell you that autocad can't. i can see it having a use in replicating small, hard to find plastic parts but we're not quite to the point of wanting to 3d print everyday items. at least not the current consumer printers.

i do think 3d printing is a revolution, but it's not going to impact our day to day till they're printing in way, way, way more materials. which they are experimenting with, actually. i fully expect a very large and very rugged kind of gantry crane suspended multi-material print head that will start at the concrete slab and slowly 3d print a skyscraper complete with 3d printed concrete, rebar, piping and maybe even electrical wires if not just conduit. i think the end-game for 3d printing is multi-material complex parts built with zero finishing and assembly. maybe even 3d print the electronics as it goes. probably well before that we'll have 3d printing revolutionizing construction by printing complex parts from single materials and have to do some assembly, but it's like every month they're working with new tech and 3d printing silicone and even human cells and biological things.

maybe we will get to a point we open the house hold 3d printer and pull out a replicated Eames Chair complete with woodgrain and leather seats. but i think it'll need to approach that before 3d printing is done in the home with regularity. as it is, i struggle to think what plastic things i would even make or use and that's what stops me from buying one. but i kinda really want one and every time i see one at a store i go off and check it out and look at the price. anyway, i think it's revolutionary and is having a huge impact on industry (did you know the Merlin engines on the Falcon 9 rocket made by space X are all 3d printed?) but the household revolution is going to take some more time.

i actually just got new stainless steel cutlery and it's not the cheapest stuff in the world. if 3d printing in stainless were a thing i could afford to do in my garage then i can totally see myself downloading the pattern and letting it go to town. but idk, gotta run that laser for like 12 hours to make 8 place setting or some shit. gotta pay for powdered steel or whatever the hell they use. it's not cheap, and it might not be cheaper than going to the store and buying off the shelf. a plastic cup might cost 40 cents, no idea how much plastic it takes to print the same cup, but the spools of plastic aren't super cheap. and considering the cost to power the print job and the time to run it, it might be best to just get small plastic stuff from the store.

i do see it decades from now being one of the, if not THE, primary modes of production worldwide. but, 3d printing composite materials. that's what will take it from narrow application to broad.

They aren't very good at printing shafts, bearings, motors etc. My printer has one 3d printed part, and it's the piece that doesn't work.

I hear what you're saying, that you feel it won't be happening soon. But it's happening right now, if you can ignore the fact that everything is plastic and generally useless. There's not a lot I want that's made from plastic and fits in an 8" cube but the only limit is imagination on what those things could be. And 3D modeling skills. That's important, and so is good slicing software. But things will only be made of plastic for a while early on, because it's easy and something that works. I remember seeing a printer that used a single strand of fiber and made it's parts out of fiberglass, I don't know if it was a multi head that spat the resin at the same time, or if it did layers of each but it worked. I looked at that and thought "Oh, my parts will be carbon fiber soon, that will be useful" And apparently there's already stretchy filament and conductive filament etc.


I highly recommend getting one if you have some cad skills, and want to play around a bit as a hobby. It might be a while before we just scan our feet and print out the latest pair of shoes, but imagine what will happen if women find out that they can feed a machine ugly shoes and it will give them their favourite new shoes!

You can already get shit printed out of metal. It's just very expensive and probably only becoming available to smaller commercial outfits, down from large industrial processes. I'm not so sure that having metal trinkets is much different than the trinkets I am already printing out of plastic.

Metal parts although useful probably still require some heat treatment, case hardening, or post print treatment of some sort. That's a pretty specific industrial tool, and I'm sure that I don't need one in my home. I do want one at a mall or something, so I can just go and print and collect my metal items. I don't think that we will be printing out a sharp metal knife, for instance, because they are cold worked and hot worked and quenched and hardened etc. But if I wanted I could get a knife blank printed, and then go and do those things to it. Or wait and print it out at home from some new material not around yet.

I think things like sunglasses, custom cases for stuff, and shit like that, are a reality at the moment. When they figure out some kind of super composite plastic then it will get interesting. Like the sort of plastic a glock is made from, hard wearing and reliable space age type of shit. Or ceramics, if plastic just becomes the carrier and inner structure with a hardened smooth ceramic outer shell. Something like that anyway.

I suppose if you really wanted to, you could print out a part and make a sand mold from it and do a lost wax type of metal casting. Not with PLA or ABS I'd imagine, but there will be something available.

Our best nerds are working on it. They have been for years, and I think that most robotics programs are actually sex droid prototype programs. You could probably print out a flesh light type of vagina though.

What body style would you choose? Are we all going to end up driving Ferrari styled cars? I'm guessing it'll be an electric car chassis that becomes readily available, and we put whatever we want on top of it. It'll be made to suit too, you could increase the size of the trunk 20% with a slider in the car building app. Then you would get the style you like, but with a lower roof line and longer doors or something.
