What happens when a fetus that will become a male, is exposed to abnormal levels of estrogen? It messes up the fetal growth.
Given that there is some evidence of such a thing as a section of the brain which is responsible for gender identity, chemicals that mimic estrogen can be looked at as a contributing factor when it comes mtf transsexuals.
But since transsexuals have existed before times of chemical pollution, you can only explain it by "just because", as in this fairly common mutation just happens more to future male fetuses.

I don't know about that. If i had to take a guess, I would guess that high levels of testosterone could also result in higher levels of estrogen.

I've been thinking about it and it's almost as if the male identity is more mature than the female one and so a man adopting femininity is regressing and this is the root of the taboo.
Like, as an example it's fine for a kid to get a cowboy hat and a cap gun and pretend to be a cowboy but it's just weird for a cowboy to put on a onesie and watch cartoons and pretend to be a kid. Just like it's cute and sweet for a girl to wear her boyfriend's shirt or something but for a boy to wear his girlfriends shirt is off-putting to both men and women.
I'm not trying to say that men are more advanced than women but gender bending is definitely more acceptable for women than men and it's both women and men that enforce it and I'm fascinated as to why.

Societal expectations have nothing to do with which sex is more mature, but the maturity of the sexes does influence societal expectations.
Men are clearly more immature than women which seems strange when you consider that women seem to retain more infertile interests such as stuff animals and other such things.
