oh yeah, the dune series is great. but you really need to read the appendix. it's probably at the end of the audio thing, but it explains
a lot because parts of it are written by the scientist researcher dude who Duke Leto met up with when he first arrived so you might like to read it earlier. that guy had lived basically his whole life on arrakis and knew more than he let on about sandworms, the spice and the fremen but it's never really brought up in the story much. it's totally worth reading whatever supplemental stuff like maps and whatnot.
the series beyond the first book is pretty good, i'd say the second book is absolutely worth reading as well. the whole series covers something like thousands of years so the last 3 books get pretty far away from the context of the first two, but are worth reading in their own right. there is plenty of continuity and the story does have an arc, but it's not real clear what that arc is until you finish book 5. book 6 was almost an "aftermath" kind of thing where the arc has ended and the resolution is all in book 6. so you really get into all of the nitty gritty "what did it all mean, and where are we going from here" kinda stuff. of course each book has it's own internal arc with the usual conflict and resolution bit, but book 6 is kind of a nice conclusion to the larger arc. the end will also leave you wondering. (i just read that this is because frank herbert had planned a 7th and i guess 8th book which his son ended up writing based on his outlines.)
that's all cannon DUNE. his son also continued with some dune stories and wrote a kind of prequel thing about the Bulerian Jihad which was kind of a fun read. but he's not quite his father. i'll have to check out the 7th and 8th books, evidently they touch on a lot of threads started in the earlier books that didn't have any resolution. anyway, it's one of my favorite book series. the stories are awesome. i don't think anyone has really done credit to the story in film or tv, but david lynch's dune (for all it's failings) at least had the right aesthetic. (the tv show based on the second and third books were kind of blah imo.)
it's cool though, i totally recommend you read beyond the first book.

Yeah, the last books are a thing unto themselves. You could start reading at
God Emperor and just move along even without knowing much of what happened in the first books because you'll pick it up through context. The first book is fucking awesome. The last three are pretty quality science fiction.
