It gave me a great sense of childish justice.

Yeah, no one ever commented about me wearing the wrong pants. I was pretty much in the "weird guys in the back of the class" group and a bit of a loner. Still, no real problems other than once in high school a Hispanic kid tried to steal my calculator after school. He threatened to stab me with a 2" pocket knife, and I laughed at him. I recall saying "Do you think you're gonna give me a nasty infection?" It was weirdly amusing because I grabbed the calculator from him, but a copy of the New Testament that some asshat who was handing out copies of the Bible in front of the school that morning and had literally forced into my hands fell out of my bag. The kid grabbed for it, and I told him "You're welcome to take the Bible." Being raised (I'm assuming) pretty Catholic, (as is most of the Hispanic demographic here) he had some kind of moment or something. Then he picked up the free Bible, and then he tried to kick me repeatedly. That didn't work out. Then he left. I like to imagine he was just dumbfounded by the idea that he tried to mug some guy and ended up stealing a Bible. I doubt the situation fully sank in with that guy in the end.

I don't actually know of anyone getting beat up unless they were in a full-on knock-down-drag-out fight. And that only happened, like, once that I can remember.

I was in a fight one time. I ran away before they could hit me.

That's not what being "in a fight" means.
